In support of the Business Incubation division within the Business and Innovations directorate, we operate legacy laboratory facilities at Daresbury for new and early-years incubation businesses.  The facilities operate under the Innovation Technology Access Centre (I-TAC) banner and provide wet and dry labs equipped with a variety of basic and specialised equipment.  Two facilities are operated at Daresbury, one focused on Biotechnology and the other on Materials Science. 

The Innovations Technology Access Centre or (I-TAC) provides unique, fully-equipped space for innovation, research and development ideally suited for start-up companies, SME’s and R&D teams. This includes top-quality laboratory space, high-spec office accommodation along with access to cutting-edge equipment and specialist technical support.

We have a new and exciting opportunity for an Apprentice Laboratory Technician based in the I-TAC Laboratory.  This will be a varied, challenging and rewarding role playing a crucial part in assisting businesses that are developing commercial concepts and demonstrating the impact of world leading scientific research.

Working alongside experienced and knowledgeable technicians, you will ensure that the facilities are fit for purpose for our tenants and users whilst working towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship.

About the role:

As the Apprentice Laboratory Technician, you will support the day-to-day operations and will be responsible for:

  • supporting the I-TAC Senior Technician and staff to allow access to the I-TAC facilities to external organisations and campus businesses
  • training of laboratory equipment to tenants and outside users and seek feedback
  • assist in conducting safety tours; recording information on SHE assure (the Safety monitoring system) including agreed actions
  • update and maintain tenant list
  • updating the mailing list (Major-domo) of all ITAC and ITAC Bio tenants
  • compile weekly checklist for equipment and services, e.g. chemical pit, vacuum lines etc.
  • check both integrity and operation of critical systems and operational equipment
  • report failures in a timely fashion
  • review safe storage of hazardous materials within both I-TAC laboratories and disposal of unwanted/waste
  • liaise with the Logistics Manager regarding disposal of waste chemicals
  • update and review security/SHE/fire provision in relation to I-TAC
  • monitor infrastructure improvements and make recommendations based on best laboratory usage
  • monitor and reminding tenants when there are lapses in good laboratory practice and Health & Safety and on areas for improvements, throughout the year
  • carry out all purchases and record all orders for tenants by GPC and procurement and prepare monthly statements and reconcile any discrepancies in orders.

Additional duties will include:

  • liaising with Estates Group to organise any repair work within I-TAC and upgrades to the building especially corridor, kitchen and toilet refurbishments
  • documenting day-to-day tasks and assisting in writing procedures in line with ISO 9001:2015 requirements 
  • liaise with tenants regarding updates on safety documentation i.e. risk assessments, safe operating procedures and safety data sheets
  • chemical inventory of tenants
  • assisting with STEM work i.e. running the 3D printers during school visits etc.

As part of the Advanced Apprenticeship you will undertake the following studies:

  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science
  • NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
  • functional skills Level 2 English, Maths and ICT (unless you hold a GCSE Grade C pass or above)

 Shortlisting criteria

  • minimum grade 4 and above (A*-C) GCSE or equivalent in English, Maths and Science
  • you must be able to travel to St Helens independently to undertake your BTEC with St Helens College
  • knowledge of Microsoft Office products – particularly Word, Excel and Outlook
  • clear and professional written communication skills
  • you must be aged 18+ due to the use of equipment and occasional lone working
  • a strong interest in science
  • committed to Apprenticeship study alongside full-time role.
