Here is an opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications and to develop professional skills as an Outdoor Instructor, whilst earning a wage. This is a full time post. Progression opportunities are available subject to aptitude, skills, qualifications and experience.

Longtown Outdoor Learning Trust is looking for an enthusiastic Apprentice Instructor to join our young, dynamic team. The Trust’s 70-bed residential centre is situated in the beautiful Herefordshire village of Longtown on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park.  It has excellent facilities in 16 acres of private grounds including a new High Ropes course, a Climbing tower, a footgolf course, an archery range and outdoor kayak training pool.  The centre is located between the eastern edge of the Black Mountains and the River Monnow.

We are currently offering residential programmes (both indoor and camp-based) as well as day, evening and weekends.  We work with children and young people, schools, families and youth organisations.  

The successful candidate will assist with the delivery of high quality social and personal development through outdoor adventure. Applicants must have some personal experience of Outdoor and Adventurous activities and be keen to develop personal skills and leadership skills in a range of outdoor activities.

Good organisation, communication and ICT skills are expected and the successful candidates will need to demonstrate their initiative and resourcefulness.  Apprentices will work towards a Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor apprenticeship and a range of relevant Outdoor skills and leadership awards.  The apprenticeship is offered in partnership with Channel Training Limited.

Accommodation will be offered with this post. If you are successful and live in the local area you can opt to stay at home if you prefer but you will need to be able to transport yourself to and from the centre each day.

Day to Day Duties:

  • Assisting with the delivery of high quality sessions of residential and non-residential outdoor learning.
  • Supervising small groups of children / young people in a residential setting.
  • Assisting to clean and maintain activity equipment and facilities used by the client groups to ensure that the highest standards of Health and Safety are achieved.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience of working with children and young people, some personal experience in outdoor activities – Desirable
  • A passion for personal development through outdoor activities – Essential
  • 5 GCSE’s (A* – C / 4 – 9) including Maths and English
  • Personal Skills Awards in outdoor activities e.g. BCU star awards, NICAS, D of E, Scouts etc – Desirable
  • Maths and English Level 1 – Essential

Future Prospects: Longtown Outdoor Learning Centre has introduced new posts for outdoor activity instructors.  Successful candidates who complete their apprenticeship will be eligible to apply for these new roles or other comparable roles at other centres.

Essential Details:

Salary: £8,385 (12 month contract)

Working Hours:  The working week will average 37 hours.  It will comprise both on-job and off-job training and will include evening and some weekend work.
