Job description
Based in our brand new facility, NUCASTLE, the Apprentice Leisure Assistants will be supporting Newcastle United Foundation staff that will be delivering a wide range of programmes from the facility. You will also be responsible for assisting the Duty Manager with all of the day to day operational duties associated with a busy customer focussed facility.
Whilst you are employed as an Apprentice you will work towards achieving a Level 2 Community Activator Apprenticeship which will include a certificate in gym instructing.
This will included:
- dealing with customer queries
- giving great customer service
- setting up equipment
- cleaning
- filling vending machines
- reporting and recoding any maintenance issues as well as supporting the Duty Manager in dealing with any problems as they arise
- coaching and supporting other in sports related activities

Future Prospects
This placement will allow candidates to develop a wide range of skills that will support them in applying for a variety of positions within the Leisure sector as well as most customer focussed organisations. The Newcastle United Foundation employ over 100 staff and is always looking for suitable candidates across a range of programmes. Although not guaranteed, there would be an expectation that positions would be available to apply for at the end of the Apprenticeship.
Skills required
We need staff that are willing to work hard, be professional, want to learn and understand the importance of delivering exceptional customer service. They will need a basic level of fitness associated with setting up sports equipment and are likely to be on their feet for most of the shift. Any coaching or leadership experience/skills would be a good addition.
Qualifications required
Basic Maths, English and ICT would be good but not essential. Any community based qualifications such as coaching or First Aid would also assist the candidate in carrying out their duties.
Personal qualities
Good time keeping and attendance, well presented and polite, ability to speak with customers and use initiative where appropriate. Being a team player with a can do attitude is absolutely essential.
Things to consider
Whilst you are employed as an Apprentice you will work towards achieving a Level 2 Community Activator Apprenticeship which will include instructing exercise and fitness.
Important Information
Apprentices will be paid apprentice wage for the duration of the apprenticeship programme (15 Months) or for the first 12 months if they are 19 or older.
Part-time hours: 30 per week
