Job Details

Are you looking for an apprenticeship close to home? Do you like problem solving? Do you like being part of a team? If so, Essity’s Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship could be for you. This is a fantastic opportunity to earn while you learn.

At Essity we manufacture and sell products that are used every day, we break taboos and challenge convention, all with the intention of breaking down barriers to health and well-being globally.

We own and manufacture many leading brands. Cushelle toilet tissue, Plenty kitchen roll and TORK are three of our leading tissue brands, all manufactured in the UK for use in the home and industry.

About the role

It takes a lot of people to make one kitchen roll and our engineers and technicians play a key role in maintaining and improving our manufacturing equipment to do just that.

Join Essity as a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice and you will have the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge to become a maintenance technician.

Our paper mill in Skelmersdale contains a vast array of machinery and equipment. Our paper machines are larger than a jumbo jet, and the machine speed is faster than the motorway speed limit.  The site runs 24/7. Key to its success is the reliability of the machinery. Innovation and sustainability are important to us.

Our Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship is designed to create our engineers and technicians of the future – a fantastic opportunity to launch your career.

We’re looking for people who embody our values, aren’t afraid to challenge, innovate, experiment, and move at a fast pace. We’re always looking for ways to improve our products and ourselves. If this, is you, we’d love to talk.

What you will do

The Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship blends college and work based technical skills training. Whilst at work you will have the opportunity to put your learning into practice with the support of knowledgeable and experienced teams.

Over four years you will obtain a nationally recognised apprenticeship as a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician.

You will study to gain a Level 3 BTEC diploma in mechanical engineering in years one and two. If you demonstrate the right level of knowledge growth and commitment during your apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to study for a Level 4 HNC Mechanical Engineering qualification in the final two years.

You will work Monday to Friday during your apprenticeship which will include a day per week at our partner college, Waterside Training, St Helens. During your first year you will attend college full time.

Who are you?

We would love to hear from you if you can show the following

  • A minimum of GCSE grade 6/B (achieved or predicted) in maths
  • A minimum of GCSE grade 5/C (achieved or predicted) in English, a science and two other subjects
  • The ability to solve problems independently
  • You can work collaboratively with others and communicate effectively
  • You like to take on new challenges and work outside of your comfort zone
  • You can successfully balance study and working life
  • You take pride in your work and take self-ownership of tasks

What we can offer you

In return we offer an excellent starting salary (above the national minimum apprentice wage), plus competitive pension scheme, annual bonus earning potential, health cash plan, workwear, holidays, and fully funded study towards nationally recognised qualifications.

Most importantly we offer the opportunity for you to work for a global company and gain first-hand experience of world class maintenance techniques within the fast-moving consumer goods market.

You will complete your apprenticeship with a robust set of qualifications, knowledge and skills providing a strong platform to develop a long-lasting career with Essity.

To kick start your application, upload your CV. You may then be asked to complete a recorded interview and some online assessments. The final stage will be an assessment day on-site.
