Reporting into the Head of Media Relations, you'll work closely with the wider communications team (comprising of Internal Comms, Digital and Investor Relations). This is a busy, varied and rewarding role. Ideal for someone wanting to begin a career in communications, this role will offer a sound foundation in Public Relations (PR) with the opportunity to expand the remit for the right candidate.

The External Communications Team sits at the heart of the business, overseeing all PR and Public Affairs activity for Mitie. You'll be promoting the business' proactive campaigns, such as Mitie's industry leadingPlan Zerosustainability commitments. You'll gain hands on experience communicating with a wide range of stakeholders including different types of media and colleagues throughout the business.

Main duties

Your job will be to support the Mitie External Communications team in protecting and promoting the positive reputation of Mitie. You will do this by supporting the team's integrated comms campaigns - covering press, social media and public affairs - as well as supporting the broader external communications strategy.

  • Support the delivery of a full proactive PR service. This includes supporting PR campaigns, contributing to a pipeline of regular press activity and writing compelling content such as press releases, articles, comment pieces and social media posts
  • Juggle this alongside daily press office needs, being able to react quickly and support with responding to complex media enquiries, gathering background information on issues at pace
  • Support key events in the corporate calendar, such as annual results, capital markets days and journalist events, including general event management, venue liaison, onsite logistics and collating briefing material
  • Build relationships with internal stakeholders to find out about new initiatives, unearthing potential story angles and generating ideas, always ensuring consistent, coherent and on-brand messaging
  • Be responsible for maintaining Mitie's newsroom, ensuring that press releases and content are kept up to date
  • Collate journalist briefings, look after our journalist database and manage our press cuttings distribution service
  • Support the press team by managing day-to-day admin including dealing with suppliers, subscription management and acting as first port of call for the Press Office inbox
  • Be an advocate for the PR team, compiling evaluation reports to play back success internally and increasing awareness of the support the team provides
  • While the main focus of the role is PR, you'll also support with public affairs activity on an ad hoc basis, as part of the team's integrated approach to external communications

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Strong communication skills - written and verbal
  • Organised with good time management, able to juggle different activities, understanding what needs to be prioritised, and pay strong attention to detail even when things are busy
  • Previous experience is not essential, but the successful candidate will be motivated and excited to learn about the world of comms

Personal qualities

  • You'll be an enthusiastic, hands-on, go-getter with keen interest in pursuing a career in communications and a passion for the news
  • A proactive 'self-starter' - someone who takes the initiative to volunteer for tasks, is energetic in making the most of the opportunity, and offers ideas at meetings

  • With strong interpersonal skills, you'll talk with confidence, in person and on the phone. You'll also enjoy writing with clarity and producing punchy copy

Desired qualifications

  • GCSE Grades 9-4 (A*- C) or equivalent in English Language and maths
  • Minimum of 3 A Levels or equivalent is preferred
  • Graduates must have studied a degree which is completely different to PR, Communications, Journalism or Advertising degrees
