Skylark Day Nursery is situated in an old chapel in the Falsgrave area of Scarborough, close to the town centre and the beach. It offers a small, friendly, family childcare service, catering for up to 44 children in a homely environment, where parents and children are made to feel welcome and are well cared for.

Job description  

Skylark is an established family run day nursery requires an Apprentice to work across the age phases of the nursery (6months -5 years) to develop early childcare skills and excellent practice. The successful candidate will support the Key workers with the day to day care of the children, engage in planning and preparation of meaningful play opportunities and help to track and assess learning alongside studying for a level 2 or level 3 childcare qualification.

  Duties will include:

 Learning to plan and assess young children to meet the early years educator standard

Preparing snacks and ensuring the care of children in a safe environment

To meet the aims and objectives of the nursery as set out in the nursery prospectus, policies and procedures and as communicated by the nursery Management

To promote the high standards of the nursery at all times to parents, staff and visitors

To ensure the provision of high standards of physical and emotional care

To be fully conversant and compliant with all nursery policies and procedures particularly the fire drill and the medication procedures

To work towards meeting the aims and objectives the Early Years Educator standard

To keep up to date informative records for key children and to make these available for parents

To plan suitable and stimulating activities, allowing for child led play and adapting schedules appropriately as circumstances demand

Assist with the preparation and maintenance of resources and ensure resources are used appropriately

To meet the Health and Safety standards appropriate for the needs of young children and ensure high standards of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained at all times. This includes maintaining a secure environment by keeping all outside gates locked, the main entrance door shut and strictly adhering to the nursery’s admittance policy

To keep room base, common areas and equipment clean

Perform cleaning and washing duties as required

You will be able to communicate well with parents and colleagues

You will show an understanding of what children enjoy doing to learn and develop and be able to engage with young children easily whilst maintaining a safe environment

It is necessary to record observations and assessments, therefore satisfactory literacy skills are desirable

The job involves working both indoors and outdoors every day. There will also be some domestic cleaning required to ensure the nursery stays clean and safe. It may be necessary to lift and carry children.

Qualifications required  

GCSE in Mathematics and English grade 4 or above. Enhanced DBS check. Early Years First aid certificate and a level 2 food hygiene certificate are desirable but not essential.

You will be friendly and positive with a good sense of humour. You will be a person who enjoys working within a team and you will have excellent personal hygiene. It is important that you are hard-working and you can use your initiative to contribute to the day to day running of the nursery. You will understand the need for confidentiality and have a professional manner.

As an Apprentice, you will be included on a Level 3 Early Years Educator Apprenticeship.
Apprenticeship standards are aimed at developing skills within the apprentices’ chosen career route, each standard has set knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be successful within the job role. This will include the completion of functional skills in maths and English.
Once you have completed a minimum of 12 months training and the employer and Babcock's Regional Trainer will confirm you have met all the requirements of the standard you will be put through to the End Point Assessment. The End Point Assessment is independent from the training and includes a variety of assessment methods, which test the skills, and knowledge of apprentices to ensure you are fully competent in your role.
As an Apprentice you will be supported throughout the apprenticeship by a structured programme of teaching, e-learning, one to one training and workplace mentoring; this will encourage and help you to meet the requirements of the new standards and will prepare you for the End Point Assessment.
