Cross Sector Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician

Working across three organisations from below:

  • University Hospital Birmingham (UHB)
  • Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust (BWC)
  • Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust (BSMHT)
  • Royal Orthopaedic Foundation Trust (ROH)
  • Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BCHC)

This is an exciting new innovative role training as a cross sector pre-registration Pharmacy Technician within multiple organisations in the West Midlands. We are recruiting to 5 posts with each of the above organisations employing one student. The apprentice will rotate through three organisations during the two year contract, ensuring all apprentices experience an acute and/or Mental Health or Community Healthcare setting. There will be a requirement for the apprentice to be able to travel within the west midlands.

Pharmacy Technicians are vital members of the pharmacy team and contribute greatly in the wider NHS healthcare team. The role of a Pharmacy Technician is becoming more varied and complex as medicines become increasingly sophisticated. Career opportunities for a Pharmacy Technician post qualification include: medicines management roles, manufacturing, quality control, staff training, information technology, supplies procurement, clinical trials, medicines information, managing sections within the pharmacy department and managing staff.

Pharmacy Technicians need to be able to work in a systematic and accurate manner with good numeracy skills. They also need to have good communication skills with a patient centred approach. Previous experience in a pharmacy or other health care setting would be desirable, but is not essential. Strong organisational and time management skills are required to ensure the successful achievement of the Diploma whilst working under the supervision of a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician.

The training opportunity is an advanced apprenticeship, full time, fixed term contract for 2 years. You will study to achieve:-

  • A diploma in the principles and practice for Pharmacy Technicians.

    Training, assessment and support will be provided by practice supervisors, education supervisors and college tutors.

All apprenticeship standards will have an end-point assessment. An independent organisation will conduct an independent end-point assessment to ensure all apprentices are following the same standards and are being assessed consistently.

Successful completion of this qualification will enable you to apply for registration to practice as a registered Pharmacy Technician with the GPhC.

Entry requirements for this post are a minimum of:

Four GCSEs at Grade A*- C/9-4 including

Mathematics, English Language, Science and one other subject.

You will be required to supply evidence of academic qualifications at interview.

The training is hospital based, with attendance at Walsall College - one day per week, and will be commencing March 2022.

The salary for this training post is £17,417 p.a. in Year 1 and £18,662 p.a in Year 2. You will be entitled to 27 days annual leave per year plus Bank Holidays.

Staff recruited from outside of the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.

Successful candidates will be automatically enrolled onto the Trust staff bank UHB+.
