Job Title: Grounds and Gardens Maintenance Operative

The Estates Department is looking to appoint a motivated individual as a Grounds and Gardens Maintenance Operative to work within the Estates External Environment Team. This is a Trust-wide position, but the post holder will be predominantly based at St James University Hospital.

The working hours are 37.5 Hrs/Wk, (Monday to Friday, 7.5 Hrs/Day) In addition the post holder will be required to participate in the Winter On-Call rota for gritting & snow clearing between 1st November to 31st March.

The role will involve assisting in the day to day maintenance of the grounds and gardens as part of a small mobile team, including cleanliness and tidiness of grounds, gardens, roads, paths and paved areas, the care of lawns, flower beds, trees and shrubberies, maintenance of roads, footpaths and other external areas as well as surface water drains and to ensure the external environment is free from hazards.

Essential / Minimum Qualifications:

NVQ or equivalent to minimum level 2 in Horticulture/Arboriculture

City & Guilds P.A Licence In Categories 1, 2 & 6 (Hand held & vehicle mounted units)

City & Guilds Chainsaw Licence In Categories 30 & 31 (Fell & process small Trees)

City & Guilds Chainsaw Licence In Category 38 (Access a Tree using rope & harness & Aerial rescue)

City & Guilds Chainsaw Licence In Category 39 (Aerial cutting using free fall Techniques)

City & Guilds certification for use of Tractors, Tractor loader & Ride-on Mowers

Current British Full Driving Licence

Desirable qualifications:

NVQ Level 3 or Equivalent

Royal Horticultural Society Level 2 Advanced Certificate in Horticulture or Equivalent

Essential Experience and Skills:

Completion of recognised registered apprenticeship

Significant (post apprenticeship) relevant experience having demonstrated high versatility and flexibility

Knowledge of Health Technical Memorandum 04 - Legionella

Knowledge of Legal Responsibilities with Application of Pesticides Within the Environment and the Personal Ownership of Acts &/or Omissions Where Personal Failure to Adhere Applies.

Knowledge of Legal Responsibilities to Protect All Fauna & Flora Covered by, but not limited to, The Wildlife And Countryside Act 1982 and the Personal Ownership of Acts &/or Omissions Where Personal Failure to Adhere Applies.

Knowledge of Legal Responsibilities to Protect all Trees Covered by "Tree Preservation Orders" (TPO's) and/or those within Conservation Areas, to Carry Out Only That Work as Specified Within Any Planning Consent and the Personal Ownership of Acts &/or Omissions Where Personal Failure to Adhere Applies.

Knowledge of Health & Safety, Moving & Handling, COSHH

Hand held Power tool certification for but not limited to, hedge trimmers and bush cutters/trimmers

Use of building & ground maintenance power & hand tools, machinery & equipment including strimmers, rotavators etc.

Ability to complete legal records as required including but not limited to, pesticide application, vibration exposure, noise exposure & vehicle use

Ability to communicate both verbally & written

Ability to use electronic work management systems for but not limited to, the receiving of work orders, the signing off of completed work & the sourcing of relevant required data.

Ability to work under own initiative and as part of a team

Ability to carry out strenuous physical tasks and work in adverse, occasionally severe, weather conditions

Desirable Experience and Skills:

Experience of:

Working in an Acute Hospital Environment

Shows enthusiasm in regard to personal development

Dedicated to support the development of a high quality service

Limited knowledge of the following:

Plant watering systems

Diesel & Petrol engine service

Vehicle Electrical Systems

Vehicle Lighting Maintenance

Hydraulics

Block Paving

Fence & post erection

Concreting

Roof Drainage Systems

Road Drainage Systems

Appointment to any position is conditional on the satisfactory completion of the core NHS Employment Checks Standards, including safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
