What is the purpose of this role?

The purpose of the role is to gain a good understanding of the Global McDonald's business. Working holistically within multiple departments, this will be coupled with the acquisition of technical skills and knowledge, through excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. In addition, as our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and the reason our business is successful, on the ground restaurant training will be an important part of your role, as it is for all our employees.

With Corporate and Restaurant knowledge and experience, you should then be able to deliver excellent support to both internal and external customers, based Globally.

What team will you be part of?

While completing your BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions, you will gain experience working in multiple teams across various departments covering Global Technology and/or partnering teams. You will complete 4 rotations of 9 months each within departments such as PMO, Deployment, Strategic Change, Restaurant Technology, Digital Product, Segment Focused, Risk Management and Networking Teams. During your time with each team, you will be expected to positively contribute to the meeting of goals and targets by carrying out the relevant activities laid out by each team.

What will your key accountabilities be?

You will gain experience working in teams across various Technology focused departments covering our Global business. You will be expected to positively contribute to the meeting of goals and targets by carrying out activities with some of the below as an example;
  • Conducting supplier and market research
  • Analysing research to identify areas of improvement
  • Providing support during projects
  • Assisting in implementing infrastructure and advising of appropriate hardware and software that might be required
  • Researching new technology that could improve current infrastructure
  • Contributing to the standardisation of infrastructure across European sites
  • Gaining a thorough understanding of McDonald's bespoke software to effectively support and advise users
  • Carrying out training of new users by embracing diverse methodology such as conference, video, face to face, webinar etc.
  • Management of data and setting up user access with respect to business solution platforms
  • Assisting in the designing, layout, features, functionality and aesthetics of bespoke software to McDonald's
  • Liaising with stakeholders and partners of McDonald's with respect to new and existing products
  • Creation of promotional videos and static advertisements
  • Creation and thereafter the maintenance of documentation associated with user manuals, installation guides etc.
  • Assisting in the writing or updating of point of sale (POS) and back office (BO) software
  • Timely reporting of any defects in software to developers and testing of new releases or fixes

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • A good understanding and effective use of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - you should have the ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form
  • Ideally, a good understanding of web design and able to implement changes using various applications and language

Personal qualities

  • Willingness to spend sufficient time within a restaurant environment to understand the business ethos and pressures of the work environment
  • The ability to use your own initiative and work in a proactive way whether as an individual or team player
  • You should be creative and innovative and be able to contribute by further enhancing presentations and promotional materials
  • The ability to work logically, methodically and systematically
  • The ability to work remotely, i.e. an internet connection, while we are in lockdown
  • The demonstration of high motivation and the ability to work effectively and efficiently with both internal and external customers

Desired qualifications

A levels (level 3) 112 Ucas points (B, B, C grades ) or BTEClevel 3 Extended Diploma in computer science (D, M, M) or a level 3 apprenticeship in IT related occupation (or equivalent).

Plus GCSEs at grades C/4 or above (or equivalent) in maths and English.Before taking their end-point assessment, all apprentices on apprenticeships at level 3 and above must achieve Level 2 English and maths.

Apprentices with these qualifications may complete them at the university while on the apprenticeship. Applicants with no formal qualifications will also be considered on an individual basis.

Future prospects

Possible full-time post upon completing the apprenticeship.

Things to consider

Office details:

The apprentice role will be based at the McDonald's Shoreditch office - the closest underground/rail stations are Old Street, Moorgate, Shoreditch High Street and Liverpool Street. Some international travel may be required, all work related travel expenses would be covered.

University details:

The University of West London (UWL) is based in Ealing, the closest underground/rail stations are Ealing Broadway or South Ealing. In addition, UWL has campus locations in Brentford and Reading, which you may be required to travel to. Travel and Meal costs on University days can be expensed back to McDonald's.
