About the apprenticeship

Duties

Assisting the Nursery Manager in ensuring that base rooms are kept in a safe, clean & stimulating condition for children at all times & reporting any hazards, defects or necessary repairs to the Nursery Manager
Ensuring that children are clean, comfortable & treated with respect at all times within routines relevant to their age & stage of development
Ensuring that children are supervised at all times, particularly during outdoor or physical play
Assisting the Nursery Nurse & Nursery Manager in ensuring the implementation of the curriculum designed for the purpose of fulfilling the functions of the nursery, including helping Nursery Manager to devise & participate in activities designed to fulfil these functions
Assisting the Nursery Nurse & Nursery Manager in being aware of children's home circumstances or any changes in other relevant circumstances
Understanding the importance of written records in a nursery & assisting in keeping a daily written record of each child who is under supervision during the day & on longer term
Caring for & respecting equipment & informing Nursery Nurse & nursery officer whenever repair, replacement or other necessary attention is required
Being aware of & working within the setting's policies and procedures at all times
Administering first aid as appropriate
Preparation of snacks for children
Participating in training courses provided by the nursery and other courses on a day release or short-term basis
Any other duties

Additional information

A Enhanced DBS will be required prior to commencement.

Skills

Knowledge and understanding of the needs of young children
An understanding of child development
An understanding and a commitment to equal opportunities
An understanding of Health & Safety and hygiene issues
Ability to communicate effectively with parent's, children and other professionals
Ability to work as part of a team and be flexible
Ability to work on own initiative
Ability to utilise skills to sustain children's interest in pre planned activities
Good organisational skills
Good core skills i.e. numeracy and literacy
Experience in a nursery setting
Experience of working with young children
Knowledge of Key worker system and record keeping
Valid 1st Aid Qualification
Basic food hygiene
Valid child protection training
Show enthusiasm and commitment to the nursery
Have a friendly, polite, approachable manner
Be reliable, punctual and flexible

Qualifications

QCF Level 2 in child care and education or equivalent

Language

Welsh Spoken Skills: No Welsh Written Skills: No

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
