Level 6 Applied Professional Engineering Degree (Tech support) – Systems Design Apprentice

Location: Cheadle

What you’ll be doing:

You will be working within the Systems Engineering Team based in Cheadle. The Systems Engineering team work on a number of existing projects and support bid activities with a view to win new opportunities.

Thales Ground Transportation Systems (GTS) UK is embarking on an ambitious growth plans to help  meet our customer’s digital transformation challenges. We are working on some significant bids such as HS2 (High Speed 2) with high profile partners and these exciting future projects require talented engineers to design, innovate and deliver solutions to shape the future high speed railways of the UK. Alongside this exciting growth we are also embarking on ambitious plans to develop our Digital solutions and have recently announced the Digital Competence Centre in Manchester. As a key part of enabling this vision and growth, we are looking for engineers to help shape our technical solutions and we need you!

Responsibilities and Tasks of the Systems Engineering Team:

  • Convert requirements into conceptual designs and prepare associated documentation by performing operational analyses, simulations and technical trade-off studies evaluating alternative design configurations and functional features.
  • Create designs from requirements using a variety of design toolsets
  • Create new concepts or modifies existing concepts to fulfil requirements where necessary.
  • Prepare system & subsystem requirement specifications, interface requirements and test requirement documents by analysing, decomposing modelling and refining customer requirements.
  • Perform technical/engineering tasks to define system design and subsystem requirements details.  Analysis and simulations are performed as necessary to identify design feasibility & driving requirements.
  • Represent System Engineering at formal Design Reviews, with particular attention to the reduction of design risks.
  • Undertake Cost Reviews as part of a Bid team.
  • Interacting with other teams such as Lead designers, Testing and project team members and project planners

Degree Apprenticeship Programme:

Through our degree apprenticeship you’ll be making the most of your talents, getting to understand engineering from the ground up; and doing so with the help of one of the biggest and best names in the industry.

As a Systems Design Apprentice you will be enrolled onto the Applied Professional Engineering Degree Apprenticeship at Warwick University, following the Control/Technical Support Engineer Pathway. For the duration of this four year programme you will combine university studies with practical application, working within our engineering function in Cheadle.

This programme is delivered via a block-release model whereby you will attend an average of six weeks at university per year - remote support will be provided online, as well as workplace support with both your technical and practical development. You will also be given some time each week in which to focus on your studies. For the rest of the time you will be working in the business, applying your university learning in a real-life systems environment. At the end of the apprenticeship you be working as a Systems Design Engineer within one of the Thales UK businesses.

Who we’re looking for:

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are motivated, committed and keen to learn.  You will be a self-starter who is able to manage their time, show initiative and has a genuine interest in engineering and Thales. Successful candidates will show self-discipline and an aspiration to achieve a degree qualification.

Entry requirements:

A minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points at A2 (Grades BBC) with at least 1 STEM subject (Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Electronics) in addition to Maths (Grade B or above). You will also require 5 GCSEs grade 9 - 4 (A-C) including English and Maths and an additional STEM subject.

Right to Work in the UK for the duration of the four-year programme.

Please note that applicants who already hold an engineering degree will not be eligible for this programme.
