Level 6 Embedded Electronic Systems Design and Development Engineer – Systems Design Apprentice

What you’ll be doing:

Primarily you will be working on the Connect Contract, which provides safe and effective communications on London Underground. Connect carries voice and data, radio and video. Airwave, the digital radio system for the police and emergency services, also uses the Connect backbone.

Additionally Thales’ long-term maintenance services ensure that London Underground’s communications network remains operational around the clock, with dependable coverage throughout the working day and also during night-time engineering hours.

The System Design Team in London provides engineers with broad experience in the various telecommunications disciplines for GTS bids and projects, as well as Services support.

It is grouped into the following areas of expertise:

  • Radio Systems
  • Transmission & Application Design
  • Voice & Telephony Systems

In order to appreciate and understand the Thales Design Process, you’ll be interacting with

  • Lead designers
  • Other designers at all levels
  • Bid team members
  • Project team members
  • Testing team members
  • Installation team members
  • Project Planners

The Programme:

As part of the team, you’ll be undertaking on the job training to enable you to ultimately be responsible for the production of designs, design estimates, design programs and design work packages for bids, services and projects to contract requirements, standards, budget, and on-time delivery.

Through our degree apprenticeship you’ll be making the most of your talents, getting to understand engineering from the ground up; and doing so with the help of one of the biggest and best names in the industry.

As a Systems Design Apprentice you will be studying towards a BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, under the Embedded Electronic Systems Design and Development Degree Apprenticeship standard with London South Bank University. For the duration of this 4.5 year programme you will be given one day per week in which to complete your University studies. For the other 4 days you will be working in the business, applying your learning and gaining a breadth of experience across the engineering function. Upon completion of the programme there will be the opportunity to apply for professional registration with the Institute of Engineering and Technology as an Incorporated Engineer.

This opportunity is currently available in Waterloo, London and will remain based in London for the duration of the Apprenticeship.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are motivated, committed and keen to learn. A self-starter who is able to manage their time, show initiative and has a genuine interest in engineering and Thales. Successful candidates will show self-discipline and an aspiration to achieve a degree qualification.

You will also need:

Candidates will have attained A-Level standard or equivalent, in Maths and at least one further STEM based subject such as Physics, ICT, Computing or Electronics. They will also require English Language at GCSE grade 4 or above (grade C or above).

Right to Work in the UK for the duration of the programme.
