Our apprenticeship offer is located at the Saltend Chemicals Park near Hull,  within the bp Applied Sciences team. The Applied Science team is a global team with skills and expertise in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, and computational sciences with world class laboratory facilities in Hull, San Diego and Dalian China.

The team in Hull are responsible for fundamental and exploratory studies in chemistry to support bp group operations and to appraise and develop new low carbon technology opportunities for business renewal. The technology centre at Hull is unique in that it is co located with a manufacturing site allowing bp to operate at a variety of scales, from fundamental research, high throughput experimentation, scale-up and process development through to technology demonstration in pilot scale units.

As an apprentice you will be hosted by our multi-discipline team comprising, scientists, technologists, and engineers. We offer an exceptional working environment to learn and develop your skills set in an on-the-job setting, as well as supporting coordinated learning opportunities in areas such as health and safety.

Working with us you will develop broad laboratory and research and development skills, building confidence in providing accurate testing results that address specific project requirements. As your skills develop you will contribute to meeting technical and research needs, providing outstanding science, delivering bespoke analysis and achieving research goals.

Skills and Knowledge Development Areas:

  • Work safely in a laboratory or pilot plant environment, maintain excellent housekeeping standards, appreciate workplace risks, and meet regulatory compliance through following appropriate safety, environment, and risk management systems.
  • Understand and follow procedures to meet the requirements of quality standards relevant to the workplace and to safely operate research equipment.
  • Demonstrate technical skills in the use of specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, including calibration where required
  • Plan and prepare for laboratory tasks using the appropriate scientific techniques and methodologies.
  • Produce reliable and accurate data and keep detailed records of laboratory work undertaken and results
  • Analyse, interpret, and evaluate data using  a range of computational modelling software.  Understand and apply statistical techniques for data presentation.
  • Communicate scientific information appropriately including the sharing of results to the wider team and the use of laboratory information management systems.
  • Recognise problems and apply appropriate scientific methods to identify root causes and achieve solutions.

Program Structure:

bp’s Research Technologist Apprenticeship programme runs for 24 months during which time you will achieve a Level 3 Science Laboratory technician qualification.

  • 24 months to complete a Level 3 Science Laboratory Technicians qualification.
  • Apprentices will receive a programme of highly relevant supervised structured “hands on” training with the Hull based team. This training is designed to develop the capabilities and range of skills that will be needed to perform work related activities within this environment. There is a strong emphasis on teamwork and the development of personal skills and behaviours.

So who are we looking for?

  • We are looking for self motivating and energetic people to join the team and develop their skills along side their study.
  • A keen interest in science or engineering.
  • A good foundation in practical skills and being used to hands on work combined with attention to detail is key.
  • Minimum GCSEs required at Grade 4 (Grade C) or Higher in Maths, English and double or triple science.
