Employer description:

The General Medical Council is a public body that maintains the official register of medical practitioners within the United Kingdom. They work with doctors, employers, educators, and patients to achieve high standards of care.

They currently have two vacancies for IT Service Desk Apprentices to join the Information Systems (IS) Operations Team.

Vacancy Description:

To function of the roles is to support and work on the IT Service Desk and be responsible for providing users with remote and desk-side technical support across all GMC facilities.


  • Supporting the IS operations teams by setting up computer hardware and software, conducting testing, resolving incidents, and completing service requests.
  • Handling sensitive information in line with corporate policies and procedures and taking personal responsibility for all information security matters in relation to the role.
  • Providing a high standard of customer service responding to requests for assistance from internal customers including:
  • Managing work in a Service Desk system
  • Sending emails
  • Making phone calls
  • Visiting customers at their desk
  • Involving other team members and third parties when required
  • Creating and completing clear, concise, and accurate documentation including user guides for customers and technical and project documents for use by other IS staff.
  • Maintaining and building relationships with colleagues, internal customers, and external suppliers.
  • Managing physical IT stock and software licenses making sure all assets are appropriately tagged, recorded, and tracked around the organisation including undertaking audits.
  • Suggesting improvements to help the teams continuously improve.
  • Carrying out general administration including preparing and circulating documents, ordering equipment, and arranging meetings.

Any other reasonable duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Desirable Skills:

  • A good general understanding of and interest in Information Technology.
  • The ability to understand technical matters, analyse information, solve problems, and to learn quickly.
  • Experience in using the Internet as a research tool.
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office 365 and Windows products.
  • The ability to build and maintain good working relationships with team members, as well as colleagues throughout the GMC.

  • The ability to work constructively as a member of a team and on your own initiative.
  • The ability to manage and prioritise a number of different tasks.
  • The ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal communication skills including the ability to explain things clearly and inspire confidence.
  • The ability to translate technical matters for a non-technical audience.
  • The ability to write in clear and concise plain English. innovation and problem-solving skills
  • A logical systematic approach to analysis and problem-solving.
  • The ability to identify improvement opportunities and to understand the concept of continuous improvement in the workplace.

Entry requirements:

You need to have 5 GCSE’s:

  • Maths and English (or equivalents) at grades D or above
  • 3x GCSE’s grade A-C in any other subject

You must not already have a qualification in a similar subject at the same level, or higher level than this apprenticeship.

Working week:

5 days per week
Monday - Friday

37.5 hours a week [all details will be confirmed with the employer]


You will be paid £329.96 per week whilst in your apprenticeship.


  • Holidays - 5 days a year, increasing by one day for each year of service up to a maximum of 30 days (you are required to use up to 2of these days should the GMC decide to close its offices over Christmas).
  • Pension - Their workplace pension is the GMC Group Personal Pension Plan, which is operated by Aviva. This is a defined contribution scheme where members receive a 15% employer contribution. There is no requirement for you to make an employee contribution, however, you may wish to consider which rate you would like to make, which will be deducted from your monthly salary under the salary exchange arrangement. You can choose to join the pension scheme as soon as you start work at the GMC. But if you don’t opt-in straight away, you will be automatically enrolled if you are eligible and most people working at the GMC will be. If you are automatically enrolled but don’t want to stay in our pension scheme, you do have the right to opt-out.

Future prospects:

A permanent, full-time position role could be available to those who successfully complete the apprenticeship.

QA’s apprenticeships are funded by the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA), an executive agency of the Department for Education.

To be eligible for a Government funded apprenticeship you must have lived in the UK or European Economic Area (EEA) for the last 3 consecutive years.
