About the apprenticeship


1. The apprentice will need to lead weekly sessions and out-of-hours clubs
2. Create session plans to fit in with club / activity targets
3. It will be necessary to work with department staff and schools to encourage children and young people to take up opportunities in their area
4. In some areas it will be necessary to work with existing local clubs to encourage children and young people to attend weekly sessions
5. There will be a need to work with volunteers and trainers within clubs and events
6. Club and event marketing plans will need to be supported
7. It will be necessary to contribute to the success of regional and national sporting activities led by the events department

Additional information

As part of the apprenticeship, training will be offered to the successful candidate. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake all the training offered.

The successful candidate will undertake an Activity Leadership Level 2 Apprenticeship Framework.

The framework includes the following qualifications:

• NVQ Level 2 in Activity Leadership (QCF)
• Level 2 Certification of Training Principles
• Level 2 Certification of Employment Rights and Responsibilities
• Essential Skills Level 1

In addition, the additional training below is provided:
• Safeguarding Children Course
• First Aid Course
• Health and Safety
• Drug Awareness In Sport
• Reflective Practice
• Various other workshops including mental health
• Specific Sports Qualifications

A large percentage of the training takes place in the workplace and within workshops and organised during working hours. However, apprentices are expected to complete pieces of out-of-hours coursework on a regular basis. All apprentices will have access to a work laptop to do so.

The Apprenticeship Department is delighted to be able to offer special support for all apprentices to succeed. Although pieces of written work are part of the course, this should not be a barrier to applicants and we are able to make adjustments and offer additional support where appropriate.

In addition to the above training, in-house training is given on the various activities of the department including organising and leading regional and national activities, holiday plans and competitions.



i. Carrying out this job will require a driving licence and a car, or the ability to travel fully flexibly and independently.
ii. It will be necessary to be able to speak and write Welsh in order to carry out this post
iii. A number of relevant training courses will need to be followed for on-the-job development
iv. The applicant must be aged 18 or over

v. A qualification in the field of sport and leisure will be of benefit
vi. Experience of working with children and young people would be an advantage
vii. Experience of training will be of benefit
xviii Understanding of the aim and objectives of Urdd Gobaith Cymru

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
