Job Details

The Substation Engineer programme will ensure you understand that delivering energy across the nation takes epic feats of engineering. You will learn whilst you earn, training at our world-class training centre and in our substations - we will show you how National Grid does it.  You will train to become a specialist, looking after our electricity transmission system; ultimately helping us keep the lights on across England and Wales.

Commissioning requires a reasoned and considered approach which builds from individual component tests through to full system commissioning which means you will have the opportunity to make the equipment live and monitor equipment integrity when it is first ‘turned on.’ Our engineers are tasked with providing technical support to others about operational procedures and compliance as well as diagnosing problems and rectifying faults.

To be considered for this role you'll need to have enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, be passionate about tackling climate change along with a curious, questioning mind.

Company

In every moment energy is rolling over hills, winding through valleys, travelling across the country, and finding its way to our fingertips, on demand – and it’s up to us to keep people connected.

Through our energy transmission network, we connect millions safely and reliably to the energy they need. It’s this purpose that drives us forward. Join us and, together, we’ll work to build a more sustainable, better connected future.

National Grid touches the lives of almost everyone in the UK, with an energy network that stretches across the Atlantic. We’re an international team, and our work underpins the lives of millions of people. Feet forwards, head up, and eyes bright, we’re working hard to create value for people today – and shape the future of energy tomorrow.

In the UK, we don’t generate or sell energy – we join the dots to get energy from A to B. From making a cup of tea in the morning, to keeping the lights on in hospitals, our electricity network puts power in the hands of people. Without it, the world as we know it would grind to a halt.

Apprentices are at the heart of our ambitions, which is why we have been committed to investing in the futures of new talent for over 40 years. From engineers to our commercial and head office roles, there’s so many directions a career here could take. And, with new technology and innovation evolving at a rapid rate, there’s never been a better time to be part of our team.

A National Grid Apprenticeship isn’t just about getting a job – it’s an opportunity to join a new generation of talent, charged with the destiny of shaping the future of energy. We’ll help you develop your skills through a combination of practical work and academic study, all the while providing you with the passion, skills and knowledge you need to power all our futures.
