About the apprenticeship


Grade: National Minimum Wage for Apprentices (£4.30 an hour)
An exciting opportunity as arisen for an apprentice position within our busy transport and fleet maintenance team. To provide administrative support to the fleet manager and fleet administrators in all aspects of maintain a large and varied fleet of vehicles and plant, whilst working towards the Level 2/3 Certificate in Business Administration (12 months) - as part of the apprenticeship scheme.

Job Purpose:
To provide administrative support to the Fleet Manager and fleet office support staff, whilst working towards the Level 2/3 Certificate in Business Administration.

Principal duties and responsibilities:
1. Working towards Level 2/3 Certificate in Business Administration
2. Assisting in general office administration duties
3. Assisting with maintaining vehicle and driver records and databases appropriate to the requirement of DVSA.
4. Assisting in monitoring workshop performance.
5. Assisting in vehicle / MOT bookings
6. Assisting in the processing technician job sheets.
7. Assisting in the management of driver tachograph database
8. Assisting with investigating complaints and responding to requests for information.
9. Assisting in obtaining quotations for vehicle accident repairs in line with the Authorities Standing Orders.
10. Assisting with the ordering of spare parts and consumables
11. Assisting with processing of invoicing.
12. Any other duties commensurate with the grade and general level of responsibility that may be assigned from time to time.

Relationships: Responsibility for People - Supervision/Management:
No Direct supervision.
Impact and Advising: Decision making, Planning requirements and Procedural context:
The post holder will be required to make decisions in relation to set tasks.
Relationships: Communication / Nature of Contacts:
The post-holder will be required to communicate with other departmental employees and members of the public.

Job Working Environment:
Mainly office based but will be required to assist in carrying out audits at various depots from time to time.

Person specification - Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
1. Willing to work towards Level 2/3 Certificate in Business Administration (12 months)- as part of the apprenticeship scheme

2. Good educational background with particular skills in numeracy.

3. Must have good communication and motivational skills with an ability to work with others in a professional context.

4. Must have excellent organisational skills and be able to work to set deadlines.

5. Must have a good working knowledge of computer based systems and all standard Microsoft Office applications

6. An interest in the day to day operations of a busy Garage environment
7. The ability to converse in Welsh.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
