About the apprenticeship

Duties

Our busy restaurant and SPA are looking for a Commis Chef who is passionate about cooking and has a willingness to learn. The role is made up of many varying responsibilities including; Preparing, cooking and presenting high quality dishes within the speciality section. Assisting the other chefs in creating menu items, recipes and developing dishes.
Preparing meat and fish.
• Assisting in the food preparation process
• Cooking and preparing elements of high quality dishes
• Preparing vegetables, meats and fish
• Assisting other Chefs
• Helping with deliveries and restocking
• Assisting with stock rotation
• Cleaning stations
• Contributing to maintaining kitchen and food safety standards.

Skills

• Basic knowledge of all kitchen sections
• Ability to work under supervision of a limited range.
• Ability to produce good quality basic food.
• Understanding of health and safety
• Understanding of basic food hygiene practices
• Good oral communication
• Team management skills
• High level of attention to detail
• Good level of numeracy·Enthusiasm to develop your own skills and knowledge plus those around you
• Adaptability to change and willingness to embrace new ideas and processes

Qualifications

Training will be provided through an apprenticeship scheme
• Level 1 and 2 Food Safety Awards.
• Minimum 6 months relevant experience.
• Awareness of manual handling techniques.
• Awareness of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) and chemical safety.
• Experience of kitchen equipment.
• Experience of dangerous equipment such as knives.
• Competent level of English spoken and written.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
