Start Date
What's the opportunity?

Join the Guidance, Control and Navigation (GCN) department. The GCN department plays a pivotal role in the concept and life of all MBDA products. Gain an in-depth knowledge of high complexity weapon systems and an insight into how the various subsystems interact and have a direct influence on design decisions. The algorithms you design lie at the heart of the missile system.

What will you be doing?

As well as guidance, control and navigation, the GCN department also hosts other areas of expertise. Predominantly there are 5 categories:
  • Guidance is the process of determining a suitable trajectory, meeting Customer requirements and System constraints, providing an effective route to target interception and maximising the probability of success;
  • Control is the process of maintaining stable flight while following the guidance demands to drive the missile onto the trajectory calculated by the guidance algorithms.
  • Navigation is the process of estimating the current missile state (position, velocity and attitude) using measurements from a range of on-board sensors;
  • Image processing conditions digital images of the target scene in order to provide an aim point and assist with navigation and guidance.
  • Command and Control (C2) is the component of the weapon system that interacts with the human operator. It presents the context of the mission and calculates the most effective method of engagement against threats.
  • Within these fields there are many challenging and rewarding activities. These include, but are not limited to:
  • Guidance algorithm design and evaluation for all phases of missile flight;
  • Autopilot and control system design and analysis;
  • Integrated navigation, such as 'Terrain Reference Navigation', and 'GPS integration';
  • Data fusion to combine data from multiple sensors;
  • Support to concept and feasibility studies,
  • Internal Research and Development (IRAD) to support future weapons and technology demonstrators;

What are the benefits for you?
  • The opportunity to develop a number of core technical skills including coding and modelling (MATLAB/SIMULINK), mathematics, dynamics and control theory.
  • Liaise with other departments, understand the complexities of many distinct parts of the missile including propulsion, aerodynamics, seekers, sensors and actuators. Through discussion and joint working with experts in these fields, you will broaden your technical knowledge of the design and function of a complex weapon system.
  • Gain visibility of a wide range of work from concept studies through to current high-profile projects.
  • We work closely with colleagues in Paris and Rome. This will give you the opportunity to work as part of one of the many international teams in MBDA.

What's great about joining this team?
  • Work with a team of friendly, hardworking and ambitious engineers with a reputation for achieving project milestones to a high quality, and on time.
  • Works on all MBDA products giving you an excellent range and depth of experience and opportunity.
  • The work is technically challenging, innovative and rewarding. The variety of work offered within the department also presents an excellent opportunity for personal development.
  • Due to the department's central role throughout a product's lifecycle, there is a real sense of ownership of a product and the opportunity to see something through from concept to in-service.

Who and what we are looking for?

Working towards a minimum of a 2:2 degree in one of the following disciplines (or similar): Aeronautical engineering, Aerospace, Mathematics, Physics, Control and Systems.

A successful candidate will:
  • Be proactive in nature;
  • Have a desire to take ownership of technical tasks and also a willingness to learn through seeking help and advice from technical experts when required;
  • Have an analytical approach with the ability to visualise complex systems;
  • Focus efforts to achieve deadlines and be comfortable adapting to work in a continually changing field;
  • Be a helpful and hardworking team player, whilst working well individually and autonomously;
  • Have the ability to work well within defined guidelines and processes;
  • Have good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Have knowledge of engineering principles and processes;
  • Have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Be eligible for SC UK Security Clearance;
  • Preferably have a working knowledge of MATLAB/SIMULINK
  • Preferably have a basic knowledge of other programming skills (e.g. C, FORTRAN)
