About the apprenticeship

Duties

Assistance with oyster farm duties at Angle Bay
Operation of purification tanks at the dispatch centre (Johnston)
Oyster grading, packing and shipping
General cleaning of tanks and equipment
Record keeping
Taking orders and liaising with customers

Additional information

Atlantic Edge Oysters are a rapidly growing oyster farm based in Pembrokeshire. We produce high-quality oysters for the table market and rare native oysters for restoration projects. The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop their career within the business and to be involved in interesting marine restoration projects.

Opportunities to develop careers in the aquaculture sector are rare and we are keen to assist our apprentices in that journey.

Skills

The successful applicant will be hard working, reliable, flexible, trustworthy, enthusiastic and highly self-motivated.

It is important to be able to get along with others and work in a team.
An enthusiasm for the marine environment is an advantage as is a desire to work outdoors part of the time.

The role is biased towards those with good practical abilities with a good key skills foundation as it is hoped that the successful applicant will have the ability to progress into other roles in the future.

Attention to safety and cleanliness is very important for all aspects of the job

The ability to follow direction accurately and to be confident in carrying them out is essential.

Other attributes that will be of benefit are:
- a good technical aptitude
- the ability to maintain records accurately
- good fitness & stamina
- a driving licence or willingness to obtain one
- good communication skills

Qualifications

Preferred grades:
GCSE Math Grade C or above
GCSE English Grade C or above
Plus, a Science or Biology GCSE

Language

Welsh Spoken Skills: No Welsh Written Skills: No

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
