About the apprenticeship

Duties

Duties will include learning how to safely perform maintenance and servicing on vehicles according to standards. You will involvement with vehicle recovery and repair, from timing belts, clutch repairs, air conditioning re-gas and brakes to workshop fuel drain and pre-MOT checks. Other duties will be allocated as appropriate and opportunities made available to develop learning.

Additional information

Before applying for this position please ensure you are able to travel to and from the place of employment in Swansea and to the XR Training Centre in Pyle once a week. You will be employed full-time as an apprentice by this company based in Swansea. You will be enrolled onto a level 2 foundation apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle Maintenance, and undertake the following qualifications:
- VCQ Diploma in Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Competence
- VRQ Diploma in Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles (Motor Vehicle 4270/4290 Series)
- Essential Skills in Application of Number, Communication and Digital Literacy level 1

Requirements

Skills

Must be punctual and reliable.
Must have a real passion for the mechanics trade and a desire to qualify.
Be able to work with others and as part of a team.
Must be committed to both the job and the training.
Must be prepared to travel once a week to Pyle for off-the-job training.
Previous experience of mechanics, official or unofficial is preferred but not essential.
Must be aware of the importance of attending XR Training once a week in order to achieve qualifications in a timely manner.

Suitable candidates may be invited to an informal interview at the training provider (XR Training) before having their CV forwarded directly to the employer. This will be to ensure suitability for the apprenticeship programme. You will then be under consideration for final interview which will take place at the employers' premises. If selected, the training provider (XR Training) will contact you with details of the interview.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
