Bioassay, Biosafety and Impurities develops and delivers fit-for-purpose, robust, and technologically advanced biological assays to progress pipeline products from research to commercial. We support end-to-end biological testing and analytical characterisation of AstraZeneca pipeline assets including mAbs, bispecifics, novel molecules, ADCs, oncolytic viruses and vaccines. We also support regulatory filings.

The Apprentice’s role will be multi-disciplinary and underpins the laboratory support operations, facilitating R&D scientist to deliver the drug pipeline to patients.

Expected key contributions

  • Acquiring and applying skills to maintain cell line cultures and cell banks

  • Learn and apply tissue culture procedures to provide top quality assay cells

  • Grow into the responsibility of managing Bioassay Development labs including supplies and consumables

  • Acquire skills and knowledge required for routine sample testing and data reporting along with communication with sample submitters from other teams

  • Adopt AstraZeneca lab book policies and procedures to record all experimental work accurately and clearly.

  • Get acquainted with and use appropriate Quality Systems processes

  • Participate in in-house meetings and presentations as and when necessary

Training and Development

AstraZeneca will sponsor you through your FdSc Level 5 Technician Scientist Course  at Kent University.

The apprenticeship combines working, earning a full-time salary, with fully funded part-time university learning (on average 1 day/week). This will give you the opportunity to gain a FdSc Level 5 qualification, just as you would if you went to university full-time, with the advantage of gaining relevant work-life skills and the excitement of helping to develop new medicines whilst taking your first steps towards a rewarding career.

Skills and Capabilities

We would be looking for the following attributes from our successful applicants:

  • Enthusiastic, flexible and willing to learn and contribute to drug development to improve patient lives

  • Strong interest in working in a life science laboratory environment, growing and using cultured cells

  • Ability to learn how to manage and maintain general working and organisation of labs

  • Good attention to detail

  • Effective communication skills on all levels and proactive problem-solving capabilities with the confidence to react promptly to deliver the best outcomes possible

  • Passion for organisation and planning

  • Ability to work collaboratively

  • Good time management skills, ability to flex and handle multiple responsibilities and tasks on a regular basis

  • Perform laboratory based investigations and basic scientific experimentation using the appropriate scientific techniques, procedures and methods of relevance to the activities of the laboratory.

  • Use computer based data analysis tools including spreadsheets and relevant company software packages

  • Find solutions to routine and non-routine problems and contribute to developing solutions.

  • Able to work independently and as part of a team

  • Basic IT skills (including Microsoft Word/ Excel)

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs (or equivalent) grades 9 to 4 including Maths, English and Science

To have achieved or predicted to achieve at least two subjects at A Level (or equivalent), including Chemistry or Biology. Alternatively, applicants must have completed a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship in a relevant science discipline.

This is a 3 year fixed term contract opportunity based at Cambridge with a starting base salary of £18,000 + 11% benefits fund + bonus.
