This role is within the Biological and Knowledge Analytics team within the Data Science & AI department. Biological and Knowledge Analytics is an insights team support drug development across BioPharma (Respiratory and Immunology, Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism and Neuroscience) R&D. There is  a focus on the early stages of the pipeline, in particular target identification and validation and understanding the mechanism of action of genes and proteins.
What you’ll do (explain what the role involves)

As a bioinformatics apprentice within the Biological and Knowledge Analytics team in R&D you will analyse large biological and clinical datasets to support the drug development pipeline. You will build understanding of biology, drug discovery and computer science to help discover new therapeutics & development of new methodologies.

Main duties of this role will include:
•    Using scientific knowledge and computational knowledge to deliver new insights in existing data.
•    Applying bioinformatics and machine learning tools to large multi-Omics datasets.
•    Exploiting knowledge graphs to discover novel associations between data points.
•    Mastering new methodologies and scientific thinking and applying it to deliver results.
•    You should demonstrate a flair for computational analytics and problem solving.

Training and Development
AstraZeneca will sponsor you through your Bioinformatics Scientist – Level 7 with Cranfield University.  The apprenticeship combines working, earning a full-time salary, with fully funded part-time university learning (on average 1 day/week). This will give you the opportunity to gain a Bioinformatics Scientist qualification, with the advantage of gaining relevant work-life skills and the excitement of helping to develop new medicines whilst taking your first steps towards a rewarding career.

Skills and Capabilities
We would be looking for the following attributes from our successful applicants:
•    Numerate, with a demonstrable flair for analytics/problem solving
•    Good communication skills
•    Able to work in a team
•    Organised, persistent, eager to learn

Entry Requirements
Minimum 2:1 (or equivalent) Bachelor level degree in a life sciences subject and/or computer sciences/informatics Or an equivalent international qualification

This is a 3 year fixed term contract opportunity based at Academy House, Cambridge, UK with a starting base salary of £31,157 + 11% benefits fund + bonus.

Successful candidates will be asked to attend a virtual Assessment day on 21st April 2022
