Working in this laboratory based position, you’ll gain a broad range of experience in scientific techniques related to assessing the efficacy of oncology candidate drugs in preclinical models. While the role will be primarily focused on in vivo immune-oncology models, over the course of the apprenticeship there will be opportunity to learn not only variety of in vivo technical skills but also conduct experiments related to ex vivo and in vitro analysis of tumour-immune function.

As a member of the Early Oncology Clinical IO team, you can expect to

  • gain experience of the holistic overview of drug development process,
  • get aptitude for hands-on in vivo work in a predominantly laboratory-based role.
  • learn to design and independently run and analyse preclinical experiments
  • gain experience in data handling, analysis and interpretation
  • participate in and contribute to internal forums
  • get opportunity to enhance transferable skills by presenting work that will enhance the communication skills.

A high regard for animal welfare, rigorous record-keeping and attention to fine detail are critical to the role.

Training and Development

AstraZeneca will sponsor you through your L5 Technician Scientist Foundation Degree. https://www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/technician-scientist/ with Kent University.

The apprenticeship combines working, earning a full-time salary, with fully funded part-time university learning (on average 1 day/week). This will give you the opportunity to gain a qualification, just as you would if you went to university full-time, with the advantage of gaining relevant work-life skills and the excitement of helping to develop new medicines whilst taking your first steps towards a rewarding career.

Skills and Capabilities

We would be looking for the following attributes from our successful applicants:

  • Enthusiastic individuals who are keen to learn and with a genuine curiosity for the science involved in creating new medicines.
  • Ability to accurately perform data entry and analysis
  • Able to act independently but also to work and contribute in a team environment
  • Good organisational skills with an excellent attention to detail
  • The ability to work on multiple tasks and understanding how to prioritise
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • A proactive approach to problem solving

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs (or equivalent) grades 9 to 4 including Maths, English and Science

To have achieved or predicted to achieve a minimum of 2 A levels (or equivalent) including Chemistry or Biology. Alternatively, applicants must have completed a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship in a relevant science discipline.

This is a 3 year fixed term contract opportunity based primarily at Cambridge Biomedical Campus with a starting base salary of £18,000 + 11% benefits fund + bonus.

Successful candidates will be asked to attend a virtual Assessment day on 12th April 2022
