We are offering two Technician Scientist Apprenticeships within the Biologics Engineering (BE) Department.
BE is responsible for the discovery and optimisation of biological candidate drugs, such as antibodies, across all the therapy area drug discovery pipelines within AstraZeneca, including Oncology, Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) and Respiratory and Immunology (R&I). In addition to pipeline work, BE is also at the forefront of developing cutting edge biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to support future drug discovery efforts.
We have two exciting opportunities within BE;
In the Biophysical Characterisation Team, you'll have the opportunity to gain a deep understanding and skills across biophysical characterisation required for antibody discovery, with a focus on affinity analysis and developability assays. The role will be in a multidisciplinary team, therefore allowing a unique opportunity to work with technical experts in a number of key areas (affinity/kinetics analysis, mass spectrometry and protein sciences) whilst still being part of a team. The workplace experience acquired will ensure you develop the skills to provide good prospects for future scientific positions. You'll gain transferable core skills and knowledge, as well as gaining skills specific to the working practices of the team.
In the Protein Engineering group, you'll be working on developing complex cell-based models for a variety of Biologics Engineering projects. This will allow us to build an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms and characteristics of the therapeutics we are developing; a vital contribution to making our future medicines. In collaboration with other scientists in the department, you'll also be able to develop expertise in biochemical, microscopy and other laboratory-based tools to characterise antibodies, and other biologic therapeutic agents, to help select the best candidate drugs to target specific diseases across the entire AZ portfolio.
You’ll be initially working towards a Level 5 Foundation Degree in Technician Scientist with Kent University https://www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/technician-scientist/ as well as the potential to extend for a further two years and gain a Honours degree.
Additionally, you’ll be recognised by the relevant professional bodies at Registered Scientist (RSci) level, for which there is a requirement that the scientist will participate in subsequent continuing professional development on completion of the apprenticeship.
Training and Development
The apprenticeship combines working, earning a full-time salary, with fully funded part-time university learning (on average 1 day/week). This will give you the opportunity to gain an Applied Bioscience FdSc qualification, just as you would if you went to university/college full-time, with the advantage of gaining relevant work-life skills and the excitement of helping to develop new medicines whilst taking your first steps towards a rewarding career.

Skills and Capabilities
- Enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals who are keen to learn and with a genuine curiosity for the science involved in creating new medicines
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Good team working skills
- High organisation skills and confidence to work independently, but also to work and contribute in a team environment
- A proactive and rational approach to problem solving, making judgements based on sound reasoning and approaching problems in a logical manner
- Concerns for standards
- High numeracy and literacy skills, as well as computer literacy
- Self-motivation and the ability to take initiative
Five GCSEs (or equivalent) grades 9 to 4 including Maths, English and Science
To have achieved or predicted to achieve a minimum of 2 A levels (80 UCAS points or equivalent), including Chemistry or Biology. Alternatively, applicants must have completed a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship in a relevant science discipline.
