We are offering an engineering apprenticeship within the device commercialisation and on-market technical area. AstraZeneca has multiple medical devices/ combination products within its portfolio including pre-filled syringes, autoinjectors and inhalation devices. In this team you'll be working with engineers across 2 sites with this role being based in Macclesfield. This team includes a group of engineers with broad backgrounds and various specialisms including design and development, manufacturability, usability engineering, device testing etc.

Product design and development engineers use engineering techniques i.e. mechanical design, fluid dynamics etc to bring new products to the market or improve the design of existing products.

This Apprenticeship is designed to build the engineers of the future who will be responsible for medical devices that are used to deliver medications to a wide range of patients. Engineering apprentices play a hugely important role at AstraZeneca, supporting the development of our new products while also maintaining products already on the market. This role will provide experience in a broad range of areas working with various diverse functions across AZ sites globally allowing candidates to develop technical as well as developing leadership/interpersonal relationship skills.

Specifically it will involve supporting the following activities:

  • Carrying out feasibility assessments of potential designs
  • Use of rapid prototyping to generate prototypes
  • Introducing new products to the market
  • Analysing data to identify any improvements or design changes
  • Use of software to support design and analysis i.e. CAD, FEA, CFD etc
  • Designing and running usability studies to assess user interactions
  • Assessing risk related to design, use and manufacture of products
  • Carrying out mechanical testing of devices
  • Initiating and managing design changes to currently marketed devices
  •  Carrying out investigations to determine root causes
  • Selection and introduction of manufacturing processes
  • Working with suppliers to deliver discreet work packages
  • device lab maintenance/ownership
  • Improve working practices to increase efficiency and quality of output

Training and Development

AstraZeneca will sponsor you through your Product Design and Development Engineering Apprenticeship at The University of Sheffield.   

The apprenticeship combines working, earning a full-time salary, with fully funded part-time university learning (on average 1 day/week). This will give you the opportunity to gain a Bachelor of Engineering qualification, just as you would if you went to university full-time, with the advantage of gaining relevant work-life skills and the excitement of helping to develop new medicines whilst taking your first steps towards a rewarding career.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs (or equivalent) grade 5 (or C) or above, in mathematics, English and a science, technology or engineering-related subject

To have achieved or predicted to achieve a minimum of 2 A levels at grade B or above ( including a mathematical based subject and a science, technology, engineering or an additional mathematics related subject).

This is a 4 year fixed term contract opportunity based at Macclesfield with a starting base salary of £21,000 + 11% benefits fund + bonus.

All applicants are required to successfully complete the employer and training provider recruitment and selection process.  This will include a series of assessments and activities to determine suitability for the role and to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.  Successful candidates will be asked to complete a series of assessments online (prior to) and also attend a virtual Assessment day on 31st March 2022
