Each year we offer opportunities to undergraduate sandwich students to gain practical experience, working alongside technical experts at the forefront of scientific research. We offer an invaluable experience with exposure to world class science and technology, and the opportunity to develop working relationships that continue well after your placement has finished.

The External Communications team is responsible for promoting the impact of STFC facilities, grant funded research programmes, international partnerships, and knowledge exchange and economic impact. It is also responsible for managing STFC's reputation and fulfilling requirements set out by out by government including publishing an annual report. The team use a variety of platforms both digital and hard copy to engage with all of STFC's audiences.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • monitoring our social media accounts and providing creative to enhance our output
  • assisting with the creation of social media evaluation reports
  • gathering news stories through networking across our sites and facilities
  • producing digital materials including video, photography and audio files for use across a range of platforms, including content for real time use such as live tweets from STFC events
  • writing content for a variety of platform
  • providing general communications assistance in areas such as media, stakeholder engagement, internet and web, internal communications and communications planning.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria

You will be exceptionally organised with good time management and effective prioritising skills. You will also have good interpersonal skills, the ability to work to short deadlines and remain calm under pressure, relate to people of different backgrounds and levels of seniority, and be diplomatic and assertive. You will be aware of the principles of customer care and be prepared to put these into practice with internal and external customers.

An awareness of the range of STFC's science and technology activities, the way that science in society activities and communications can contribute to a positive image for the organisation and a flexible approach to working hours would be an advantage. Some evening and weekend working will be mandatory.
