The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe's largest research organisations. We're trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we're driving ground-breaking advances in science, technology and Engineering.

STFC is one of nine organisations that have been brought together to create UK Research and Innovation (UKRI); a new organisation with a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.

Each year we offer opportunities to undergraduate sandwich students to gain practical experience, working alongside technical experts at the forefront of scientific research. We offer an invaluable experience with exposure to world-class science and technology, and the opportunity to develop working relationships that continue well after your placement has finished.

In the Scientific Computing Department (SCD), we research, develop and support leading edge scientific software and high-performance computational and data storage infrastructures to perform and support world-class science. We help research communities to store and transfer research data from small to large scale and provide software to analyse, simulate, visualise and locate research data.

The Software Engineering Group is in the Scientific Computing Department. We design, implement and support a wide range of software enabling researchers to catalogue & discover their experimental data; capture analysis workflows; make links between data, publications and software and support the research software development lifecycle.

The technologies used for this include Java, Python, C#, Ceph, web services, JSON, virtualisation as well as enterprise databases such as Oracle and MySQL, applications servers such as IIS and Paraya, enterprise technologies such as ActiveMQ, and a wide range of Linux and Windows technologies.
