The ABI represents the UK insurance and Long Term Savings industry. This is no ordinary industry - we are the largest exporter of insurance in the world and play an essential part in the UK's economy. We manage investments of over GBP1.6 trillion and pay nearly GBP12bn in taxes to the Government. The industry employs around 300,000 people and whether it's saving into a pension or insuring your car, nearly everyone in the country buys our members' products at some point.

Representing this industry to policymakers and politicians is no simple task. It takes a sharp brain, an ability to make complex subjects sound simple and buckets of hard work and determination.

That's where you come in. We need a keen, intelligent and hard-working individual to join our team for 12 months starting summer 2019 as an intern. In return you'll get the chance to learn about public affairs and insurance in organisation with an extraordinary breadth and depth of expertise to draw from.

Your role:

This role will give you the inside track on how Government and one of the UK's biggest, most successful industries work closely together.

Day to day, you'll be working with colleagues from across the organisation and will be involved in a wide range of activities. These include dealing with enquiries from political stakeholders, drafting briefings for external audiences, helping to organise external events and undertaking political monitoring.

What training and benefits are offered?

On your first day we'll take you through a full company induction. You'll then have inductions to get you up to speed with anything from Events to how our finances work, plus one to ones with relevant colleagues. Everyone goes on the CII Introduction to Insurance course and will receive plenty of on the job training. We host various Staff Learning Events throughout the year and you will be able to attend relevant ABI and industry events.

Additional training will be driven by your own personal needs and ambitions and we have a range of courses as part of our Learning and Development offering.

We're looking for:

It goes without saying you'll need a keen interest in current affairs and politics. We're not looking for lots of prior work experience but you will need:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • An organised workstyle with the ability to prioritise and manage several pieces of work at any one time.
  • The ability to work under pressure and to agreed timelines.
  • A mature, confident manner with the ability to build strong working relationships and to interact effectively with colleagues.
  • A strong team player who values taking a collaborative approach.
