Job summary

Would you like the opportunity to invest in your future by developing and maintaining skills, knowledge and competencies to be able to work in a dynamic and changing health care environment? We are looking for committed, diligent and industrious Support Workers/Assistant Practitioners preferably working with patients in a perioperative clinical setting.

As an Apprentice ODP, you will complete a 3-year Apprenticeship training programme (Level 6 degree study) working towards registration as an Operating Department Practitioner. The training programme starting in September 2022, will include both academic and work-based learning provided in collaboration with Derby University and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust.

At the end of the training period and on successful completion of all elements of the programme, a preferential interview will be offered for an AfC Band 5 post in Operating Services, STHFT.We would be particularly interested in hearing from clinical support workers who have worked within the trust or those wanting a new challenge or other health care workers with experience of working within a health care setting.

Main duties of the job

  • The ODP Apprenticeship is a three-year training programme working towards registration as an Operating Department Practitioner with level 6 BSc Honours degree.
  • Develop and maintain skills, knowledge and competencies to be able to work in a dynamic and changing health care environment.
  • The training programme will include both academic and work-based learning provided in collaboration with the University provider and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust.
  • All post holders will be based in a theatre area, but it is expected you will work in various surgical specialities that will include young people and adults in scrub, anaesthetics and Post Anaesthetic Care Unit settings which will include other external Health settings to meet training demands.
  • During the initial phase of the training programme, all work activities should be under direct guidance and supervision of the registered practitioner. As the training progresses, following discussion and agreement with the mentors and supervisors, supervision and guidance will be both direct and indirect.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 3 years due to this being an apprenticeship. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts.

Qualifications

Essential

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades A-C/ 4-9 to include Mathematics and English (functional skills level 2 acceptable)
  • 112 UCAS points or Level 3 qualification in a health and Social Care related course.
  • Health Care Certificate
  • Committed to undertake study skills session prior to commencement of training in their own time if required.


Desirable

  • NVQ/QCF Diploma Level 2/3
  • Recently completed formal learning at any level to demonstrate recent learning.


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience of providing care.


Desirable

  • Has experience in a Critical Care/Theatre environment.


Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of the Code of Conduct for Health and Care Professions Council.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the Apprenticeship ODP role in relation to the team
  • Organisational skills.
  • Able to prioritise workload without supervision.
  • Has the ability to communicate at all levels.


Desirable

  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and Service improvement
  • Teaching experience or qualification.
  • Recently completed formal learning at any level.
