A career with Rolls-Royce means working together to solve complex problems. Creating cleaner, safer, more competitive power is a serious challenge that will change lives across the world. How can we make our engines quieter, but stronger? Deliver power systems that are more cost effective, and also more environmentally friendly? What will the propulsion systems of the future be made of? These are the kinds of challenges you might tackle on our Materials Engineering Graduate Development Programme. The materials we use are fundamental to our ability to develop our pioneering power systems, and this programme will give you fantastic exposure to the team that provides new material solutions and expert advice to our design teams.

The programme

Our structured graduate development programme is designed to give you an immersive, hands-on experience. You'll get first-class training and support, and you'll also learn from some of the most respected and highly qualified professionals in the field.

You'll start by developing an in-depth knowledge of materials by combining on-the-job learning with training modules and live project work. You'll be exposed to the entire engineering lifecycle and as you develop, you'll test your experience on increasingly complex challenges. From this foundation, you can start a journey towards becoming a world-class specialist, a broadly skilled engineer or to a leadership position.

What you'll do

You'll complete three attachments covering the key stages in our engineering lifecycle: Define, Make and Verify. Each placement will last for around four months and because you'll be putting your mind to work on live projects, you'll have the chance to share your thinking and test your ideas from the word go. You'll be solving problems and involved in designing integrated systems while keeping an eye on feasibility, customer need and cost. You'll also complete a real-life 'Design & Make' improvement project with other graduates. As part of a small team, you'll face up to a current company challenge or opportunity, and deliver a solution that offers direct value to a customer. You'll manage the whole project from start to finish, evaluating the problem, designing a solution, making a prototype, verifying that it works and then planning how to roll it out in the business using project management and systems engineering tools and techniques.

What you'll need

Excellent communication skills, plenty of initiative and a passion for problem solving are all important qualities for this programme. You should also have achieved at least a 2:1 bachelor's degree in Engineering, Maths, a relevant Physical Science or Computer Science, or an equivalent qualification. Flexibility is important too, as you could be based at any of our sites, depending on the business area you join.

What you'll get
  • Competitive salary
  • Work towards professional membership of bodies such as the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining
  • Bonus schemes
  • A competitive pension
  • Leisure facilities and numerous sports societies and social activities
