Our Defence business is involved in truly unique work. We're even responsible for powering the whole of the UK's Royal Navy nuclear submarine fleet. Our submarines are so advanced they can circumnavigate the world 40 times without surfacing, and we're constantly looking for new ways to innovate. On this apprenticeship, you'll develop the skills you need to help deliver ground-breaking projects in a fascinating area of our business. If you're a strong team player with good organisational, communication and influencing skills and you work hard to get results, this is the path towards a great career in our global business.

The programme

Typically lasting for two years, this is an intense programme which give you all the training and support you need to take up a Project Planner role with us when you complete your apprenticeship. This comes with a significant rise in salary to reflect the business-critical nature of the role - you'll be a crucial member of the project team. As a trainee planner, you'll help us build schedules from the customer requirement all the way to approval. Your responsibilities will include updating and maintaining work package schedules and carrying out assurance checks, analysing schedule data plus report cost and delivery date forecasts, and providing work-around planning models ('what-if's') when critical rework is needed.

To succeed, you'll need to rise to plenty of challenges. As well as carrying out your day-to-day duties, you'll also be expected to complete online and external project management courses. Alongside this, you'll immerse yourself in five core training modules that include definition, planning, scheduling, monitoring and control which, if you're successful, will gain you the Association of Project Managers (APM) project planning and control (PPC) foundation and practitioner qualifications. These will be essential to you gaining professional qualifications such as the International Project Management Association (IPMA) Level D. It means you'll be equipped to take on the highly responsible Project Planner role, where you'll be encouraged to further fulfil your potential. Across everything you do - from your studies to your practical work - you'll have one of our nuclear experts on hand to support and mentor you, and to help you build your understanding of our Defence business.

What you'll need

You should have at least five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 5 or B above, including English Language and Maths (obtained or predicted). We're also looking for the right approach. The ability to work as part of a team, knowing when it's time to act decisively to achieve the right result, the potential to lead and excellent communication skills are all qualities we look for. As a planner in the making, you'll also need to be exceptionally organised, confident, commercially aware, able to prioritise and happy to work to tight deadlines.

Due to the nature of this work, we're unable to employ anyone who doesn't have the legal right to live and work in the UK. This role is subject to Full UK Security Clearance and if you've spent more than three months outside of the UK in the last five years, we might not be able to employ you.

Security clearance can take time, so it's best to apply as early as possible.

You must also be 17 years of age by 1st October 2019 to meet our security requirements.

What you'll get

A competitive salary starting from GBP11,932 a year
Student membership of the Association of Project Managers
A competitive pension, and 33 days' holiday per year (inclusive of bank holidays)
Career support from day one
Work towards professional project management qualifications
