Job summary

The Blood Sciences Service provided by the laboratories at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Swindon. Blood Sciences comprises of Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, and Point of Care Testing (POCT). Within the department, a range of tests is provided that reflect the usual demands of a modern District General hospital service.

You will develop new skills and knowledge whilst working with an established team gaining valuable work experience and a recognised apprenticeship qualification. This qualification will require a reasonable ongoing commitment by the candidate for the duration of the apprenticeship. A good contribution is expected with practicable levels of concentration to tasks at all times. You will also be expected after training to use your own initiative and work at low levels of supervision.

You will be the fifth apprentice the department has supported with the Trust's Apprenticeship Schemes and it has proved mutually rewarding in supporting the professional development for all candidates over the last five years.

The lab sees a great deal of merit in the applicant taking a proactive approach to finding out about the role. Excepting covid requirements - the lab would be very keen to provide an informal visit for serious potential candidates

Qualification gained will be either Healthcare Science Assistant Level 2 or Customer Service Level 2 dependant on the successful candidates preference.

Main duties of the job

You will assist Biomedical Scientists (BMSs) who contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing and interpreting a range of scientific procedures on biological specimens using highly complex equipment
  • Inputting of test request information into the Pathology computer system.
  • Safe receipt and handling of laboratory specimens.
  • Verification of appropriate sample types and matching of samples with request forms.
  • Bar coding and distribution of samples to appropriate laboratory staff.

Job responsibilities

Working in Blood Sciences service to efficiently undertake basic administration & clerical duties which may include the following duties as directed:

To attend regular meetings with the supervisor and assessor and attend training sessions, leading to an

Apprenticeship Certificate in Business Administration or Science equivalent

  • Inputting of test request information into the Pathology computer system.
  • Safe receipt and handling of laboratory specimens.
  • Verification of appropriate sample types and matching of samples with request forms.
  • Bar coding and distribution of samples to appropriate laboratory staff.
  • To operate a laboratory centrifuge for pre-testing sample preparation.
  • General enquires service by telephone.
  • Greeting public at Reception Hatch
  • Accurate inputting of test request information into the Pathology computer system.
  • Photocopying documents.
  • Scanning documents.
  • Printing documents
  • Using various documents to maintain presentations, records & spread sheets.
  • Use email.
  • Using Microsoft office to produce correspondence and documents.
  • Prepare text from notes and minute meetings once trained
  • Proof reading documents

Education, Qualifications and Training

  • 4 GCSE's grade A*-D or equivalent
  • Ability to meet Level 1 literacy at selection
  • Ability to meet Entry level 3 numeracy at selection
