Job overview

Our Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport system. As a TfL building surveyor, you will be part of the world renowned TfL Engineering. You will gain the unique experience of working as a building surveyor on essential infrastructure designed to keep London moving. You will assist in a wide variety of construction projects in the TfL portfolio, from routine maintenance to major station redevelopments.

TfL has a wide variety of properties ranging from historic listed buildings to major transport interchanges and depots. Any one of which you may be asked to survey and give reasoned advice to those who are responsible for their upkeep.

What will I be doing?

As an apprentice, your 6-year development programme will be made up of up to 12 placement rotations. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what some of your placements could look like:

  • Working on a major project – 6 months – Assisting the Built Environment team to achieve a world class station. Reviewing detailed designs or maybe checking a completed piece of work is safe for the public to use.
  • Commercial Development – 6 months – Identifying and specifying projects that will enhance the tenanted assets to ensure rental income is maintained or improved. Ensuring regular maintenance activities are carried out. Assisting with the management of project works
  • Asset Operations – 6 months – Maintenance surveys across the LU station buildings or depots. Asset condition surveys to ensure the LU assets are not degrading. Specifying minor works to enhance the working conditions of the station staff.
  • Facilities management – 6 months – Looking after the day to day maintenance of a variety of buildings. Internal refurbishment of offices to allow them to be used by TfL staff. Reactive maintenance requests

Where can this career take me?

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship you will be a Chartered Building Surveyor with world renowned status. You will have the opportunity further develop your career and be responsible for you’re the design and implementation of your own projects, which could range from minor refurbishments to major infrastructure projects.

It is TfL’s intention to bring the right candidate up to the level of Associate of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Assoc RICS). This is a very good grounding for a fascinating career in the built environment and you will be encouraged to progress to full membership of RICS (MRICS) and beyond.

What training and support will you get?

You will be working towards a level 6 (Degree) qualification in Building Surveying and Chartered status within the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

Typically, you will be required to attend university on day release.

Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements.  We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities and structured networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from your scheme sponsor and your Line Manager. You’ll also be connected to a ‘buddy’ who will be a more experienced apprentice from the scheme.
