This is an exciting opportunity to start your career in Data Science working in the dynamic, multi-disciplinary analytical team at the heart of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

UKRI invests over £8bn on research each year. This funding leads to world class research which saves lives, supports the economy, and improves society. It also has a major influence on how the Research and Development (R&D) system operates. That is why we need to make sure that UKRI’s activities and policies are based on the best available data and evidence. The Analysis team uses a range of methodologies to take on some of the most important issues surrounding R&D. We work hand in hand with policy and strategy colleagues, putting evidence and analysis at the core of policy development and delivery and performance monitoring and evaluation.

Reasons our staff enjoy working for us:

  • A focus on personal development. You will work with your line manager to develop your own Learning and Development plan. We support new analysts to become subject experts and to develop skills in data science, coding, presenting findings, and other areas of analysis.
  • We work with large and interesting data, including data collected by UKRI from grant applicants and research organisations as well as various other public and private data.
  • An excellent benefit pension scheme
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Season ticket and rent deposit loans
  • 30 days annual leave plus 10.5 public and privilege days
  • Being part of a team that values excellence, mutual support, and collaborative working
  • Our apprentices have access to the UKRI Early Career Network and we will provide opportunities for our apprentices to network with data science apprentices in other government departments, including the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
  • For more information on the rest of our employee benefits, see:

We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us to request accommodation. The role will be based in either Swindon or London, however, patterns of work in the team allow for a large proportion of work to be done from home and there will be the opportunities to visit colleagues in other UKRI sites.

The role

The UKRI Analysis Team is seeking to recruit 2 Apprentices to start in September 2022 based in Swindon or London. The role will lead to a BSc (hons) in Data Science from York St John University. Alongside this you will work alongside our team of 40 expert analysts and have exposure to large and interesting data sets.

We will fund and support your studies over a 4-year period to achieve BSc (Hons) in addition to helping you develop a broader range of personal and professional skills. The Data Science Apprentice will gain first-hand experience working as part of a professional team on live projects supported by theoretical learning. You will have the opportunity to make an impact early on in your role, where you’ll also learn the specialist skills tailored to the knowledge, skills and behaviours of a competent data science professional. You will receive mentoring from trained project professionals as well as access to internal and external training courses.

We know it’s important to consider future career prospects and there are plenty of opportunities to continue your professional development after your initial apprenticeship within UKRI.
