Job role:

Production Engineer supporting the facilities, utilities and equipment used in the development and clinical manufacture of a range of solid dosage forms. An individual contributor role that applies technical support and practical engineering services to develop equipment and process understanding, which may include some validation, safety and asset lifecycle management support.

Organisational Relationships:

Department: Drug Product Manufacturing group, Drug Product Supply, Pharmaceutical Sciences Small Molecule (PSSM)

Reports to: Head SDM Validation and Technical Support

Liaises with: Key stakeholders in DPS, DPD, PGS, GO, Quality, Safety, external subject matter experts

Resources controlled:

Role will typically operate as an individual contributor at a local level contributing to department and cross group activities and input to cross department initiatives.

Main duties will include:
  • Colleague will be a recognized SME in certain aspects of equipment or processes with a matrix management approach
  • Colleague will work closely with operational and technical teams in the manufacturing group to deliver robust manufacturing solutions, Global Operations (GO) Quality (QA) Drug Product Design (DPD) Pfizer Global Sourcing (PGS) to support the manufacture of oral clinical supplies and solid dose process development activities
  • Responsible for manufacturing equipment and process development support which may include preparation and execution of qualification and validation protocols for equipment, mechanical, computer control and utility system.Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) of process equipment and manufacturing system
  • Ensuring maintenance of equipment and utilities is carried out to the required standard. The role will develop understanding of operating windows and the impact of process parameters on product development. Appropriate data gathered and communicated to demonstrate control of equipment and processes and use of data in a diagnostic and predictive manner
  • Support manufacturing and drug product development by ensuring knowledge is utilized to enable complex project delivery. To report data in an efficient and concise manner that enable appropriate utilization
  • Assist in ensuring future equipment meet the technical requirements of the operation
  • Contribute to the selection and integration of new equipment and services, ensuring validation, quality requirements and the process capability of the equipment is in line with pre-defined needs
  • Evaluate, manage, and report the process capability of the equipment and services employed in the operation
  • Support and develop equipment/services robustness and manage the risks and impact of failure
  • Manage minor projects which include all operational and financial aspects. Deliver these within Pfizer system and guidelines with minimal adverse impact and maximum ROI
  • Drive quality, safety and continuous improvement related activities
  • Deliver training and support to ensure efficient use and deployment of equipment
  • Provide immediate troubleshooting and manufacturing support during manufacturing operations


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Understanding of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes
  • Understanding of process scale-up, knowledge management and technical transfer
  • Understanding of engineering operations including, instruments, controls and mechanical aspects of manufacturing equipment and associated services
  • A good understanding of GMP and management of quality through quality systems
  • Experience of Safe Systems of Work and risk assessment tools used in both Quality & Safety areas beneficial
  • Working knowledge of equipment, facility and utility asset life cycle management from initial design, procurement and vendor management through to validation and operational use
  • Evidence of planning and organizational skills to project manage the operational and financial aspects of capital projects
  • Good interpersonal, organisational and communication skills (both oral and written) and demonstrated skills in team matrix working. Proven ability to deliver technical reports and presentations
  • Rational, innovative and creative approach to problem solving
  • Ability to learn and work with new technologies
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within high performing teams as well as independently
  • Ability to apply learning from prior experience to new situations and problems
  • Ability to evaluate information from a broad range of sources

Desired qualifications

To be eligible for this position you will need;
  • 5 GCSEs at grades C/4 or above (or equivalent) including maths, English and Chemistry or a chemistry related subject (such as Food Science) or equivalent qualifications
  • Will have, or are predicted, A-Levels equalling 104 UCAS points, including Mathematics and a Science-based subject (or equivalent), or alternatively;
  • BTEC/EdExcel ED at MMM including Merit in: Calculus (Unit 7) and Further Engineering Maths (Unit 8)(or equivalent)
