What will the apprentice be doing?
  • You'll work alongside WRAP's Economist and other teams with specialist analysis and opinion. One day you might be modelling the effect of price-based policies on resource use and the next assessing the price of recycled plastic. Topics where WRAP's teams need specialist economic advice include upcoming policies such as the bottle Deposit Return Scheme.
  • Most days an Economist at WRAP will conduct research and gather insight to better understand the subject at hand. All tasks will support WRAP's Policy and Insights team to consider the economic impact of our work to improve the environment.
  • To be successful in this role, you will have strong numeracy skills and be interested in putting economic theory into practice for a world where climate change is no longer a problem.

When applying for the role, you'll be asked to describe how you meet the following job essentials:
  • Educated to at least GCSE standard, with at least 5 GCSE passes (or equivalent), including Mathematics at grade 6 or above
  • Achieved at least 120 UCAS points at A level (equivalent to ABB or AAC). Candidates without traditional qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivation with the ability to work to deadlines and to work well under pressure
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with people at all levels of the organization.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

You will work towards the Professional Economist (integrated degree) level 6 apprenticeship. You will also achieve a BSc in Economics alongside the apprenticeship.

Training is delivered in a blended way. Much of the learning will be online with yearly residentials at the University of Kent's Canterbury campus. There will also be intensive face-to-face workshops across each year of the apprenticeship. These are delivered in London or Leeds (location will be the closest to your place of work).

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

The successful candidate will be appointed on a 4 year apprenticeship contract. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you may be appointed to a permanent Economist role, but we can't guarantee this will be the case.
