Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Specialist Wheelchair Therapist to join our established Therapy team at Airedale General Hospital.

As an experienced Band 5 or Band 6 occupational therapist, this post will provide you with the opportunity to expand and develop your skills and gain valuable clinical experience and leadership experience in a variety of settings.

Initially you will be part of our specialist wheelchair service team developing skills and experience in the clinical assessment and provision of specialist wheelchairs, wheelchair related special seating, powered wheelchairs and pressure relieving cushions for Adults and Children with long term mobility needs.

Our friendly team consists of a Senior Occupational Therapist, Specialist Wheelchair Therapist, Assistant Practitioner and Therapy Assistant. The role is varied and interesting and gives opportunities to work across multi disciplinary teams, lots of scope for expanding your experience and competencies.

You will also be actively involved in longer term innovative audit and service development projects and be able to supervise and develop junior therapists and students as well as therapy assistants.

Main duties of the job

Principle duties and responsibilities:
  • To prioritise, plan and deliver clinical case work
  • To apply evidence based, specialist knowledge and skills
  • Provide a key role in partnership working with patients, carers, the MDT, and wider statutory, private and voluntary sector services.
  • To support team members in ensuring the effective functioning of the team
  • To actively participate in quality improvements
  • Provide support to the clinical lead and service managers deputising for them as required
  • Provide effective student training and development

Beyond the initial period of assignment in Wheelchair services there could be opportunities to work across different Therapy Teams which is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of occupational therapy, really optimising your opportunity for career development.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent pre-registration award in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy
  • State registrations with the Health Care Professions Council
  • Recent post graduate courses relevant to the post with experience of working with clients with acute and longer term physical health needs
  • Completion of course in Professional Practice education


Desirable

  • Successful completion of a professionally validated specialist courses
  • Post graduate qualifications in Postural Management and Mobility Services.
  • MSc modules in a relevant area of practice
  • Member of relevant Professional special interest groups/organisations


Experience

Essential

  • Comprehensive, relevant and recent experience as an occupational therapist or physiotherapist at Band 5 level
  • Recent experience of working - in acute and community settings - with a range of clinical specialities - complex physical and mental health problems
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working and working collaboratively with other professions and agencies including statutory, private and voluntary sector services
  • Experience of multidisciplinary guideline development, implementation and audit
  • Experience of clinical supervision both as supervisee and supervisor
  • Recent experience of student training


Desirable

  • Experience as an occupational therapist or physiotherapist working at band 6 level
  • Experience of working in a clinical capacity in wheelchair services
  • Experience of working in neuro/rehabilitation services
  • Experience of use of a pressure mapping system.
  • Experience of taking part in or leading on Projects/ service improvements
  • Experienced in use of MS IT applications
  • Experience of taking part in or leading an audit or research project

Essential

  • Specialist knowledge and clinical reasoning skills to support expert clinical practice in Occupational or Physiotherapy
  • Knowledge of the roles of other professionals and the principles of partnership working with key stakeholders involved in patient care plan management
  • Knowledge of clinical standards and ability to implement and audit these in the team
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance, audit and research
  • Knowledge of the principles of student-centred learning and reflective practice
