Apprentice Bill Production Controller

Come and join us as an apprentice bill production controller. You will gain an understanding of all aspects of the document production processes which are business critical to Domestic Retail billing of customers. United Utilities produces over 9m bills and letters to customers each year and the work you do will provide essential support to the Bill Production Controller who is responsible for the smooth running of this operation.

A bit more about the role

During your 18-24 month programme you'll be involved in a variety of aspects such as dealing with suppliers, planning and implementing changes, responding to incidents and supporting resolution plans, financial awareness of allocated budget, document design and how this is controlled

Document print services are provided by a third party supplier so the role will include working with them to ensure the services provided meet the required standards and resolving any issues that may arise on a day-to-day basis with their account manager.

Successful apprentices will achieve a Business Analyst Level 4 standard which is endorsed by the Institute for Apprenticeships.

What you'll learn from us:
  • An understanding of end-to-end document composition processes and the controls in place.
  • Change management for document changes from understanding initial requirements through to design and implementation working with our supplier.
  • Communication skills as you work with internal and external stakeholders in managing day-to-day document production and also in preparing for two peak billing periods.
  • Financial awareness of the allocated budget and costs involved in print and postage expenditure.
  • Problem solving issues linked to bill production that arise through to resolution.
  • Understanding of Business Continuity plans in place that ensure United Utilities has the ability to continue producing and issuing bills during major incidents.
  • Analytical thinking to understand where potential improvements could be made that will either improve customer experience or reduce operational costs.
  • Work with colleagues to deliver changes on a flexible basis and also aligned with strict deadlines.
  • Apply an in-depth understanding of the systems, tools and processes used in your role.


What we're looking for:

We're looking for someone who's keen to gain hands on experience, develop practical skills and achieve the standards needed to really succeed in your role.

You'll have a dedicated mentor and manager who'll be on hand to support you every step of the way. All that we ask from you is that you're willing to learn, know how to work as part of a team and can manage your time and workload to get things done.
  • You'll also need to have GCSEs or equivalent, grades A-C or grades 9-4 in Maths and English

Plus one of the following:
  • 2 A Levels or International Baccalaureate or any other Level 3 qualification such as a BTEC Extended Diploma relevant to the sector
  • 12 months' work experience in the last 24 months relevant to the sector
  • A relevant level 3 Apprenticeship
