What will the apprentice be doing?
  • To support the effective and efficient delivery of the Trading Standards Service, in accordance with relevant legislation, allocated resources and best practice guidance
  • Provide operational assistance to other Trading Standards colleagues.
  • Maintain a limited caseload of complaints and investigations that reflect the experience and knowledge of the postholder.
  • Plan, carry out and report on proactive project-based work, whilst acting under the supervision of senior officers within the Service.
  • Complete a range of inspections at business premises covering issues that reflect the experience and knowledge of the postholder.
  • To disseminate and handle intelligence and related information in accordance with established procedures and recognised guidelines, acting under the supervision of other officers
  • To act as a witness in relation to legal proceedings in court and other tribunals
  • To prepare and maintain accurate records, statements, exhibits, reports and prosecution files regarding inspections, visits, complaints and investigations, containing sufficient detail to support legal proceedings

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The successful candidate will undertake the Level 4 Regulatory Compliance Officer Apprenticeship, as the first step on the road towards becoming a qualified Trading Standards Officer.

Apprentices are required attend any sessions / tutorials / meetings as required by the training provider, build up a work-based portfolio for End Point Assessment (EPA), and be on target with their learning to complete their first year of study.

During the first year, Apprentices will work on developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours as set out in the apprenticeship standard and gain work experience under supervision of the following, as outlined in the Job Description

The trainee will be registered on the Trading Standards Professional Competency Framework and work towards the completion of Stage 1 of the Framework

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

After the successful completion of stage 1 of the Trading Standards Professional Competency Framework, the trainee will then work towards the completion of stage 2, to include weights and measures, food standards and/or animal feed modules, along with all other relevant criteria.

Appointment as a fully qualified Trading Standards Officer is dependent upon the successful completion of all relevant criteria within the Professional Competency Framework
