Job summary

We are looking for experienced, dedicated and highly motivated Band 5 Theatre Practitioners for theatre scrub team who are looking for opportunities to further develop their career. Experience in scrubbing is preferable but not essential as we provide training.

The Treatment Centre has 6 theatres, 2 recovery areas and a Discharge Lounge. We undertake various specialities including Orthopaedic, General Surgery, Urology, Robotic Surgery, Gynaecology and Ophthalmology. The Treatment Centre cares for a range of day surgery and in-patient cases across all of our specialities.

As a Registered Nurse or ODP you will work within a busy theatre environment as such you will need to possess excellent communication as well as strong team working skills.

Main duties of the job

You will become an integral part of the theatre team ensuring all patients are receiving the highest standards of care in accordance with recognized protocols. It is therefore important to posses excellent inter-personal skills as well as be able to promote a learning environment.

You will need to be flexible to change and be able to evidence the delivery of good patient care.

We have a total of 19 Theatres across our Trust, which you may be expected to rotate and work within also covering an on call emergency out of hours 24 hour service 7 days a week.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Training


  • RGN and/or ODP Registration with NMC / HPC


  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of mentorship & preceptorship training
  • Completion of relevant critical care modules at level 2
  • Advanced Life support certificate

Previous Experience


  • Relevant experience in either an inpatient or day surgery theatre or other relevant clinical area
  • Peri-operative practice.......multi skilled in anaesthetics, recovery and scrub
  • Experience of providing clinical support outside of the theatre area
  • Participation in formulation or procedures to ensure best practice



  • Can implement research based practice
  • Patient focused approach

  • Understands the work involved in caring for a patient in theatre
  • Knowledge of the aims of the Trust


  • Knowledge of the DipHe ODP course and support required pre and post qualification by other junior staff

  • Can participate in the audit process



  • Be able work within an environment which where you will be exposed to blood, body tissue and body fluids.
  • Be able to work in close proximity to patients undergoing open and closed operative procedures
  • Be able to concentrate for long periods of time
  • Have good manual dexterity
  • Have excellent vision with / without glasses
  • Able to stand still for long periods of time which could be for the duration of any operative procedure
  • Able to work in an environment with high levels of physical activity ? Moving and Handling (including use of appropriate supporting equipment) ? Twisting ? Bending ? Pulling and pushing
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment
