Job Details

What will you be doing?

As part of our Engineering team based in Manchester, you’ll have the unique opportunity to be part of the once-in-a-generation Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) programme.

TRU is a multi-billion-pound, transformative, long-term railway infrastructure upgrade programme that will improve connectivity between Manchester and York, delivering faster, longer, more frequent and more reliable rail services across the north of England

Amey, in partnership with Arup, BAM and Network Rail is upgrading the route between Manchester and Leeds, which includes civils, track, railway systems and electrification.  The opportunity to use modern digital signalling and train control also means we can lay the foundation for the Digital Railway.

We’ve partnered with Intertrain to offer a dynamic Level 3 Rail Apprenticeship Programme.  Our course is delivered over two years via a mixture of Day and Block release in Leeds where you’ll gain a Level 3 Diploma in Rail Engineering at the same time as getting real experience on the job, working on live rail projects in delivery.

Our structured development Programme provides a fantastic opportunity to help you take those initial steps in your career and designed to complement what you’ll learn at your training provider. Working as part of a specialist team based at our rail operations hub in Leeds and collaborating with wider, multi-disciplinary teams, our programme includes training in track, overhead line, power and distribution, civils and signalling.

What will you bring?

One of the best things about an Apprenticeship with us is that you don’t need to have experience of working in engineering or the Rail industry. However, you will need to share our passion for these and demonstrate your desire to develop yourself within this exciting area.

  • Minimum Qualification requirements gained via either:
  • Minimum 2 GCSE’s (or equivalent) Grade A*-C. Must include Maths and English
  • OR, Successful completion of a Level 2 or 3 Apprenticeship/BTEC (in Mechanical, Civil or Electrical Engineering)
  • Available to join the programme in September 2022
  • Passion for developing your skills both professional and personally
  • Ability to occasionally travel and stay away from home – mainly between Manchester and Leeds
  • The commitment and drive to complete your two-year course and final Assessment
  • Due to contractual requirements you must be 16 years of age or above

If you possess the determination, initiative, and curiosity to become a technical expert in your field, or one of our future leaders, then our Rail Technician apprenticeship programme could be for you.

What we will give you:

We place great value on all our people and the contribution they make to our business, so it’s important that our rewards make us all feel valued here. We can offer:

  • Starting salary of £18,525.00
  • Exceptional development and progression plan
  • 24 Days annual leave + Bank Holidays, Pension Scheme
  • You will join our Early Careers Community which will provide you with peer-to-peer networking activities, involvement in a range of social value and extra-curricular activities.
  • A range of benefits including a flexible benefits scheme which includes access to buy additional annual leave, cycle2work, and gym memberships; online voucher portals which give you access to thousands of discounts with online retailers; and social value benefits which include the ability to volunteer for a charity of your choice, participation in the DofE award, and support for fundraising initiatives.
