Lonza are looking to recruit a Technician Scientist Apprentice to provide technical support to vectorology functions within R&D. Lonza is one of the world's leading and most-trusted suppliers to the Pharma & Biotech and Speciality ingredient markets.

The position is a laboratory based position and will be to provide scientific and technical support to vectorology and cell culture within the research and development environment as part of a cell line construction group based at Cambridge. The team are responsible for generating novel vectors to expand the production capabilities of Lonza and determining the performance in a variety of mammalian cell culture contexts. The successful candidate will work closely with the team to carry out vector construction activities, learning how to use in silico tools, generation and preparation of DNA elements and modern sequencing techniques. In line with Lonza's procedures, a training plan will be put in place and implemented when the candidate on joining Lonza.The expectation is that the person will be able to be effective in supporting vector construction and cell culture activities within 4 months of arriving at Lonza. The successful candidate will join a fast-paced, results-orientated environment, with a high expectation that the candidate will deliver work right first time to high quality. Teamwork and collaboration is imperative with the R&D teams based at both Cambridge and Slough.

A high-quality of work will be expected, with an emphasis on accurate recording of data and procedures. In the R&D group, projects are managed within a matrix structure that requires flexibility and agility in working to tight timelines.

Responsibilities include:
  • Large scale production of vectors to support the vectorology team.
  • Generation of novel genetic fragments for cloning.
  • Maintenance of cell cultures and performing routine cell culture activities and media preparation.
  • Contributing to data analysis, writing study plans, presentations and reports.
  • Maintaining electronic laboratory datafiles.
  • Supporting the team with preparation for experiments.
  • Laboratory support activities for maintaining equipment and the running of the laboratory.

Desired qualifications

5 GCSE Grade 9-4 including Maths, English and Science

You must have gained a minimum of 80 UCAS points from a minimum of 2 A-level subjects including Biology (or equivalent, e.g. BTEC) and an additional Science or Maths.
