Job Details

You can have a genuine impact on our network success whilst you’re earning and working towards professional qualifications!

One of the responsibilities of our Network Expansion (Netex) division is the planning and delivery of our high-speed fibre network for consumer and business customers.  We have two new apprenticeship opportunities in our team responsible for cable infrastructure:

As a Cable Engineer, you won’t just be responsible for laying new cables for our customers to use, but you’ll have to make sure that they can get through areas without any obstructions too. This scheme won’t see you digging and running cables through customers’ gardens, but you will find yourself:

  • Installing cables in the underground network, streets, data centres or street-side cabinets
  • Using specialist techniques and tools like trailer mounted equipment or winches to get the job done
  • Building and testing new core infrastructure cables to the existing and expanding network
  • Logging into the Open Reach network to review maps and re-route through blockages

As a Civil Avoidance Engineer, you’ll be responsible for checking for obstructions and resolving blockages that our external partners cannot navigate (even more specialist equipment at your fingertips!). With over 2 blockages on average for every 1km of cable laid, you’ll find yourself busy with these responsibilities:

  • Checking the quality of contractor/partners work to clear obstructions
  • Liaising with design teams, contract partners, local authorities and Open Reach to resolve blockages
  • Logging into the BT network to review maps and re-route through blockages

As a Network Cable Delivery Engineer, working in our team responsible for cable infrastructure, these are two new apprenticeship roles that you will be considered for.

What we look for

You should have a passion for solving problems as you will face different situations each day that will need to be resolved quickly. The ability to organise and handle your responsibilities confidently with little guidance from management is ideal.

We’re 100% committed to having a workforce that represents every part of our society, so we’re keen to hear from candidates of all backgrounds and circumstances. The only barrier to applying would be if you didn’t have the right to work in the UK and were unable to obtain it without our support.

What’s in it for you

A starting salary of £19,000 with the chance to progress through the team. During the scheme, you’ll study towards a Level 3 Network Cable Installer Apprenticeship. Not only are you going to build your knowledge, experience and skills, but you can also enjoy some amazing benefits, including:

  • 25 days holiday
  • Your birthday off every year
  • Employee discounts on mobile, broadband and TV services

...and loads more!

What is involved with studying for an apprenticeship?

Your apprenticeship is made up of learning on the job, but also gaining the academic skills to put into practice in your day-to-day job.  As a result, you'll complete the apprenticeship as part of a structured learning programme alongside working in the role. The learning programme is made up of a suite of modules and milestones and you’ll be required to evidence your work against these modules via tasks and assignments. For some apprenticeships, you may also undertake additional technical qualifications, which include studying for, and taking an exam. Once you have completed your modules and milestones, you’ll then move to your End Point Assessment (EPA) which is typically made up of an interview and a project. Once you pass this stage, you will receive your apprenticeship qualification with us.
