Pettit Contracting Services are looking for apprentices who relish a challenge and are committed to progressing their career with a young, rapidly growing Contractor in the south east.

You should be a strong team player with commitment and enthusiasm. Although no previous experience is required, you are required to have a genuine passion for developing a career in the construction industry.


GBP12,000 to GBP15,000 per annum, depending on age and experience.


Pettit Contracting Services are a Civil Engineering and Building Contractor based in Kent and are currently looking to interview prospective Civils/Groundworker Apprentices to join their teams working on Kent, Essex and Sussex Civil Engineering and Building Ground Works Projects.

An apprenticeship enables you to earn a salary whilst you study for a nationally recognised qualification.
You'll get to work alongside and learn from our civil engineering experts for theory elements of our apprenticeship, and you'll learn under the site supervision of highly skilled and experienced works managers, who have a full spectrum of installation knowledge & capability to share with you, to help you become an excellent Civils Operative/ Groundworker.

What does the apprenticeship involve?

This is a 2-year apprenticeship which includes attendance at our designated classroom training area at Discovery Park, Kent and/or at our site training area in Ramsgate, Kent.

You will be taught a full syllabus of relatable construction principles, methodology and practical exercises, including:

* Health, Safety & Environment
* Site health & safety (Building sites and roadways)
* First Aid
* Confined Space Training
* Establishing work area protection including segregation of highways works
* Signing, Lighting & Guarding
* Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace
* Cable Avoidance Tool Training
* Operating powered units, small tools, compaction plates

Task related skills:

* Productive working practices
* Setting out secondary dimensional groundworks & utilities
* Excavating holes and trenches (Manual Digging) in the workplace
* Drainage installation
* Utilities duct installation
* Reinstating ground condition in the workplace
* Placing and compacting concrete in the workplace
* Preparing and mixing concrete & mortars to various spec
* Pouring concrete to form structures in the workplace
* Concrete testing
* Reinstating excavation (including Highway Surfaces)
* Laying kerbs, edging, channels and paving
* White lining

Post Qualification Sector related qualifications:

-Highways England Common Induction Course (Passport Scheme)
-NRSWA Streetworks modules
-EUSR (National Grid BESC:AME)
-Sentinel (Rail)
-EUSR (Water)

Typical Working Week

You will work on site for four days per week and attend college for one day a week. Most site hours are Monday to Friday, 08.00-17.00.
